âWhen he comes out, heâll be First Minister,â Varda said.
âIsnât he already?â
âNo, he has to speak to Lord Bacon,â Varda said, slightly transfixed by the screen. âYou need to get the Premier of England to sign off on decisions like this, on behalf of the Queen.â
âOh,â was the only reply I could think of. I knew of Nicholas Bacon. Vaguely. He was technically the executive branch of the English Parliament â a stand-in for the Queen that meant he got a stipend and held the occasional lunch here. This was very much a ceremonial position, and there werenât even that many ceremonies. We were unlikely to see him more than twice in one year.
