Once Alex is dressed, coiffed, and makes a quick stop in the makeup chair, he heads to the studio around 11:15 for the first show of the day. Production of each show runs in real time—that is, the amount of time between the three rounds lasts exactly as long as the scheduled commercial breaks, so Alex is able to chat with members of the audience for only a few minutes.

And unlike hosts on other shows who appear as if they’d rather have a tooth pulled than banter with the studio audience, Alex admits that it’s a favorite part of his taping day. “I really enjoy talking to the audiences,” he said.

He believes that since they made the effort to show up, he needs to engage them in the short amount of time they have together. “The people who come to a taping are entitled to something special, so you’ve got to give them something extra,” he said. While some hosts retreat backstage or talk with a camera operator during the commercial breaks, Alex heads straight for the audience. “This is their only chance to see and hear me up close and personal, so I joke with them and they love it.”

Most of the time, audience members will ask him about his mustache or what he thinks of Will Ferrell’s impression of him on Saturday Night Live, but at one college tournament on the road, a woman stood up and asked, “Boxers or briefs?”

The audience twittered and then quieted down, waiting for Alex’s response.

When he came back with “Thong,” it brought the house down.
