CHAPTER 9

Manjelah

I promised God I was gonna do a six-month hiatus from dating. When the six months came and went, I was like, Hmmm, lemme just finish out the year. When the year was up, I finally felt like I’d paid my dues. I was hungry, but now I could buy my own food. I was ready to go out with guys but this time for the right reasons. If I sound like a contestant on The Bachelor, just know I’d never ever get in that hot tub without a hazmat suit on.

What I’m trying to say is that after a year in hibernation, the cuddle queen was back on the prowl. I went to a friend’s wedding, and one of the first guys to catch my eye was an extremely good-looking, impeccably dressed mixed dude with the most luscious afro curls. He kind of looked like Maxwell or Lenny Kravitz, but his overall vibe was less hippie, more hip-hopster. I tried to get his attention over by the big bowl of shrimp cocktail, but he didn’t even look my way. I was like, That’s weird—who does he think he is? I didn’t introduce myself because I was playing the pretend-not-to-notice-him game. I was the only player. I waited for one of my friends to introduce us, because obviously everyone noticed that he and I should totally be together, or at least make out and then pray about it later. But nobody did. When it was time for me to go home, I slowly walked toward the door to give him and everyone else one last chance to help us fall in love real quick. Right as I was about to walk out my friend shouted, “Anjelah, wait… you forgot your jacket.” So I went home without even saying hi. Oh well, he missed out, I reassured myself. That night I did what any normal girl would do and stalked him on the internet. I checked out his social media, googled him, and found out that his name was Manwell Reyes. He was in a Christian hip-hop band called Group 1 Crew, and he was Puerto Rican and super hot in every picture I found of him. I remember thinking, Wow, this guy is super hot and talented and loves the Lord! We should totally be together. Only he didn’t even look my way that night. So with all the pride my dad had taught me, I said out loud to no one, “Oh well, you missed out, dude. You should have said hi.” And then I closed my computer and forgot about him.

After that, I dipped my toe in the dating pool, but I’d changed a lot in the past year. Taranjelah had been tamed, and I was sure she’d spun her last web. I was looking for something a little more serious, but I still wasn’t exactly sure who that was or what that meant. God hadn’t been that specific about it, so I was still flailing around a bit.
