In the camp, only Shavyn and Erona remained. Valkil and Malquin had been gone a while, recruiting Aioni. Ahlaha had gone to bathe in the nearby river and they could hear her singing.
âDo you suppose sheâs talking to herself or singing an actual song?â Shavyn asked without looking up, working on a broken boot clasp. âIs there a difference in Moridah?â
âI donât know,â Erona said. She lay on her back, hands under her head, eyes closed. âWhy donât you ask her?â
âI canât understand a thing she says. Even when she speaks Camarein, her accent is too strange. You catch any of it?â
âSometimes.â
A breeze picked up and Shavyn sighed. âI could do with more of that. Itâs hotter than a fever.â
âMalquin says weâre not too far from the oasis.â
âThatâll be wonderful.â Shavyn paused. âYouâve been talking to him a good bit on the road. You getting along?â
âHeâs nice,â Erona said. âI think heâs been heartbroken for so long he doesnât know how to be happy.â
âHe tell you what happened between him and Valkil?â
Erona squinted at Shavyn. âSort of. Not really. Do you know?â
Shavyn shook his head. âValkil never even told me had a brother. It must be some secret.â
âWell,â Erona said, âI like him.â
âBetter than Valkil?â
âI donât know.â Erona thought a moment. âI like Valkil, too. I donât think anyone could help but like Valkil. Seems strange that so many people seem to hate him instead. Malquin, for example. This Aioni person, whoever she is.â
âI donât understand it either. Valkil can be a tough teacher but heâs always been kind to me.â Shavyn hesitated. âDo you like Malquin better than me?â
Erona laughed, then thought better of it. âIâm sorry. Are you serious?â
Shavyn kept his eyes on the boot clasp, though he only fumbled with it idly. âI canât tell if youâre laughing because it should be obvious that you do like Malquin or so obvious that you like me.â
âShavyn,â Erona said, âyouâre a sweet boy. Iâm grateful to you for being the first in Verden to believe me. But I donât think itâs the right time to begin a romance.â
âWhy not?â Shavyn asked. âCould be that hunting the therill is the last thing we doâ¦â
âIt killed my friends,â Erona said, tone sharp. âMy mother. Talking about it gets me hot, but not in the way youâre hoping.â
Shavyn looked at her at last. âIâm so sorry. I only meant, I think weâre both scared. I thought maybe I could cheer you up if youâd let me.â
âYou know what would cheer me up? Kill me a therill, Shavyn. Bring me its head. I promise you Iâll love anyone who does that for me.â
