Uncle Sal

POOR DIANA. I SAT ON the stairs, intently watching the woman I had decided would be perfect for my nephew. They’ve both been through so much in life, but they don’t bow to it. They keep their heads high and plow forward, ready to find a new path around the problem. Diana was going to have to do that all over again after the storm. While it wasn’t planned, and all I could do was predict the storm and protect this house, there was nothing I could do about Diana’s place.

Now that a tree decorated her living room, and she and Dorothy were safe, I would use it to my advantage. I would have to find a way to make sure Diana stayed here as long as possible. Granted, it was risky, since they were barely getting acquainted with each other. Living under the same roof could certainly cause some rough patches, but there was always the flip side of that coin. Maybe living under the same roof for a few weeks would be equivalent to several months worth of dating.

I knew Diana well, and I saw one flaw in my plan. It was likely that living here would turn her from the independent woman with an opinion, into the obedient woman without one. Devin did that to her, among other things, and if he wasn’t dead, I would punch him.

I laughed, slapping my knee from the humor of my own joke. Come on, punching someone as a ghost, that’s funny stuff. My fist would go right through his face. Oh well, Devin was living what he deserved for all eternity.

I slipped through the screen of the living room window and took in the sight of her ruined residence. Diana damn well deserved happiness, and I was just the ghost to give it to her.
