Della stood in the center of the stones, remembering what Robertson had said. The place was magical. Some of the great standing stones dated back to 3500 BC, she had been told. And Orkney also seemed to have weather at times that added to the feeling of something beyond.

The wind was blowing, as it had when she was younger. It picked up her hair and flew it almost straight out. Standing there, she felt the centuries of human existence sweeping through her. She stood very still and closed her eyes, wondering if there were ghosts that haunted the stones.

There must be, she thought. All those years...

But when she opened her eyes, she was alone.

It was still early for tourists—or even locals who enjoyed the stones—to be out. And Mason was with Detective Robertson and the others a distance away, searching the ground by the clump of brush where the body had been discovered spread out.

Standing in the center of the stones, feeling the wind as it whipped around her, she wished they had come just to enjoy the countryside. From her vantage point, she could see the gentle roll of the land leading to the mountains, and see what was left of other massive stones that seemed to reach to the sky. From where she stood, she could see the crystal waters of the lochs, and in the distance the rise of the mountains. All around her, there was the flat land where the stones had once risen in their circle thousands of years ago. The greens of the trees and grass and brush were touched by the beauty of a stunning blue sky, and it truly seemed as if she stood in a place of magic.

Did their killer choose this place? Because while he might be seeking eternal life, the death he created was against everything in nature that was so perfect and beautiful?

She was heading toward Mason’s position when she was suddenly attracted by something that seemed to be out of place.

A small white stone set visibly near one of the huge rising stones.

She walked to it, curious, and frowned as she stooped to pick it up. But she paused when she saw an etching in the stone. Reaching for gloves and an evidence bag, she finally picked it up.

She wasn’t sure what it was, the texture was almost like marble. It was oval-shaped and about four inches wide and two inches high. She put it in an evidence bag.

And there was no doubt it was from the killer. He had left them another message.

So as the Stones stand for millennium do I, for blood is the life.

She rose, calling out, “I’ve got something!”

As she did so, she saw Mason had already stood; he also seemed to have found something on the ground.

She hurried toward Mason, and seeing her, the others did the same. He carried an evidence bag that held a cigarette butt. She frowned, knowing the butt would give them DNA but that it might not matter at all.
