Matthew clung to the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white, his eyes glued to the road to Portland, while his mind raced. Something is very wrong with Sammy. I need to talk to someone.
Not knowing who else to turn to, he drove straight to Dr Gravesâ office without calling ahead. Dr Graves had helped his mom and Matthew remembered Sammy went to him, too. He had been there many times while he was in high school after he got his driverâs license, driving his mother to her appointments, waiting until she was finished, and then taking her home. He hated it. She was always worse after her appointments for some reason.
It was almost 5 pm when he reached the Graves Psychiatric Treatment Centre. The lobby looked different since he was last there. At the information desk he learned Dr Gravesâ office had moved to the first floor in the west wing and he hurried down the hall.
There was only one person sitting in the waiting room when Matthew arrived and rushed up to the reception window. The receptionistâs back was turned.
He tapped on the glass to get her attention. âHello?â He looked around and the one man sitting there looked up at him, then resumed reading his magazine.
The receptionist turned around and smiled at him as she slid open the partition.
âMay I help you?â
âUh, hi there. My name is Matthew Anders, my sister is Samantha Anders and she is, or was, a patient of Dr Graves. I need to talk to him right away. Itâs urgent, please?â Matthew gave her his best puppy dog look.
âIf itâs an emergency, you need to call 911,â said the receptionist.
âExcuse me,â said a woman from behind the receptionist, âdid you say your name is Matthew Anders? Iâve been trying to locate you for Dr Graves. Iâm Judy, his assistant.â
âYou have? Iâm visiting from out of town and I just need to speak with the doctor for a few minutes.â
She gave him an encouraging smile. âDr Graves should finish up with a patient soon. Have a seat and Iâll let him know you are here. Iâm sure heâll want to see you before his next patient arrives.â
âYes, thanks. I really appreciate it.â He sighed with a mixture of relief and confusion. Why would the doctor be trying to locate him? He took a few deep breaths to calm down, taking a seat nearby.
After a few minutes, the door leading to the doctorâs office opened. A woman came out and went over to the man waiting. They said a few words and left.
A little while later, the same door opened, and it was the receptionist smiling at him. âMr Anders, Dr Graves can speak with you now, please come this way. Iâm Liz, by the way.â She fluttered her eyelashes and walked away from him with a little bounce in her step.
Was she flirting? Matthew followed her to the end of the hall. The door was open and Dr Graves was waiting for him.
âMatthew?â
âYes, thank you for seeing me like this.
