Chapter 13

Chan wandered the town and reminded himself that he wasn’t here to be impressed. He was here to achieve their purpose and leave. But he was interested in the place, nonetheless.

Horsetown was set up like a fortress – even without the fences it was quite defensible. The layout of the town was very efficient, and there were also natural training grounds in various spots.

Chan wondered if he’d ever get a chance to make his family’s dream – of owning a school as their ancestors had done in the ancient past – a reality. He shook off the wistful feeling thinking about his dream always gave him. He had work to do.

An inordinate number of women lived here, but one in particular had caught his eye when they’d first arrived in town.

She was young, perhaps only twenty, with hair like corn silk and big, blue eyes. She’d been standing with another girl who had the same eyes but hair black as coal. He assumed they were sisters, since they were similar in size and build.

But the blonde stood out to him. She’d been so excited to see their horses, her face had come alive, and he’d seen just how beautiful she really was. He hadn’t been able to speak to her before she’d left the main street, though.

He wandered over to the racetrack to get a feel for where they’d be bartering for the foal tomorrow and was rewarded to find her and the other girl there as well.

She glanced up and noticed him. “So, Mister,” she said with enthusiasm, “you gonna barter that foal tomorrow?”

He smiled. “Yes, I believe I am. Why are you so interested? Will you be bidding on him?”

“No,” she said bitterly. “We aren’t allowed to own anything.” Her expression brightened. “But Sadie and I are the best horse trainers here, so we’ll get to train and break him.”

Sadie sighed. “Keldie, you know Hawk’ll want to train him himself.”

“Yeah, but he won’t do a good job, and he’ll realize it quick. He’ll let us train him. Tusk always had us do the best horses…at least, after Josie left.”

“Yeah, and he kept the damn guns on us too, in case we decided to train one to escape with, like she did.” She gave Chan an appraising look, then shook her head. “You couldn’t help us, no matter what,” she muttered.

“Oh? What do you mean?”

“You ain’t a hero,” Sadie said with finality. “And that’s what we need.”

“I see. And you’re correct. A hero I’m not.”

“Figures.”

“And, is that what you need, as well?” Chan asked Keldie. “A hero?”

His expression made her stomach tingle. “Your wife wouldn’t like you looking at me the way you’re looking at me,” Keldie said slowly.

He laughed. “I’m not married. The lady with me is one of my two best friends. Her husband is my other best friend. She’s under my protection until we meet up with him again. By the way, my name’s Chan.”

“Nice to meet you, Chan, I’m Keldie.” Hearing he wasn’t married made her happy for a moment.
