chapter 12
The Wire
After hearing the clank of the steel door closing, Chucky shrieks, “What’s up, fool!” to which Capper responds, “What are you doing, fool!”
For a while, the two men chatter about old friends from the neighborhood and what landed them in jail this time. Then, abruptly shifting, Chucky tells Capper he has a letter he must see. Chucky can be heard extracting the letter from his mouth, and there is the faint sound of paper rustling as he unwraps it, and gives it to Capper. A few moments of silence follow as Capper reads it. Concluding with the exclamation, “Man, Puto, that smell,” Capper is heard ripping up the letter and then a toilet flushes. At this, Chucky laughs ruefully as he has now maneuvered Capper into a discussion about their Tony problem. Chucky presses Capper for some paperwork he can use to clear their hit on Tony with the shot callers in Pelican Bay. Chucky tells Capper, “… see it won’t fall back really on me, but at the same time they gonna scold me if I don’t go with no fucking paperwork, homie.”[**]
Capper whines to Chucky that he has no paperwork, but hopes to get some from his former attorney. He then offers that his aunt (Angela Rodriguez) had called him two days after the shooting and discussed what happened. Capper says this is proof that Tony broke the “code of silence” by telling his mother what really happened in Lot 10, “… and so that’s how my aunt knew everything.”
Capper tells Chucky about how his wife, Monica, has nightmares about Lot 10 and then, in a voice barely above a whisper, “I did it … I did it, and she drove me away.” Chucky is coy, feigning disbelief; he says he had always thought “Zap” was the shooter. Capper then tells Chucky about how the police put pressure on him to talk when he was in jail in Santa Barbara. They threatened to arrest his wife unless he talked, but he didn’t admit anything. “So why am I gonna tell ‘em something?”
Chucky agrees, “You gonna tell on yourself?”
Capper goes on to tell how the detectives’ threat to arrest his wife and take his children into foster care was so terrifying that he even considered confessing: “… if worse comes to worse, I’ll tell em, ya know, fuck it. I’ll do it and just let my wife go.”
The conversation drifts away for a while until Chucky subtly brings it back to what led up to the shootings. Capper explains what he told the police about the Hurricane Club, saying,
“I come back and these fools and Zap are chilling … they told me they’re kicking us out. They kicked us out the front and I don’t know what happened to those guys. And then they … they go, well, how come you guys didn’t wanna leave? I go, what are you talking about, leave? I left. Me and my wife left … We went out to the car. So, and then, um he’s telling me, what about the other guys.
