Chapter 28

Louise, San, 1950

While I was reading the referral letter from Michelle’s doctor at the nurse’s station, a nurse from the other floor called about Mrs. Collier. She’d been running a low-grade fever and wondered if I could come and see her.

After finishing Michelle’s admitting notes and orders, I ran downstairs and took Mrs. Collier’s pulse and felt her forehead. She seemed lethargic and answered questions with a yes or no—this was so unlike her that I was concerned.

Her husband followed me out of the room. “What’s going on?” he asked, with a deeply furrowed brow.

“She has an infection that we’ll treat with medications and fluids. I’ll probably start an IV.” I looked at him and felt badly that I couldn’t give him better news. He was unshaven with dark circles under his eyes. “I’ll have them bring a cot into the room. You need to get some sleep, and you can use the shower in the hall when you get up. The nurse will make sure you get a tray for dinner.”

He nodded and then walked back into the room.

I didn’t want to let on how much I was worried about her. Mrs. Collier had been making such good progress; it would be a shame if she ran into complications now. With her immune system already compromised, perhaps she just didn’t have the resistance to fight a post-operative infection.
