Two days later, Iâm miraculously still focusing on the positive, and my view of life is replaced by some trepidation when my phone vibrates with an unexpected call from Adam.
I like Adam. I swear I do.
But fact is, Iâm an emotionally immature twenty-one-year-old man, and I resent him for taking my best friend away from me no matter how much I try not to.
Itâs nothing personal, in fact, if anyone had to seduce Sebas away from Cavendish, Iâm glad it was him. Heâs a good guy.
Itâs amazing to me that heâs so down to earth despite coming from one of the most famous families in the country.
Even little olâ me, not knowing fuck-all about football, knew who the Darnells were before I came to Cavendish. I didnât know Adam was here, but I knew they existed. If you consider I was an angry teenager with tunnel vision focused only on school, thatâs saying something.
Still, Adamâs friendly, good-natured, funny, heâs fucking hot as hell, and he loves Sebas the way I believe my best friend deserves to be loved.
So I swallow my resentment, and I treat Adam with all the respect I have.
âHi, Adam,â I make sure my words sound friendly.
âHey, Glenn, I hear congratulations are in order.â
âYeah, thanks,â I rub my neck, not knowing what else to say.
âAlso, congratulations on your perfect score on the GRE,â he snorts.
âWait, what? What were the first congratulations for then?â Iâm so confused.
âFor locking George down,â he cackles and gets a chuckle out of me because I do feel smug every time I look at Georgie and know heâs mine. At least for now.
âYeah, I really got away with murder on that one, didnât I?â I smile more genuinely now.
âI mean, the boy was straight!â His words make me snort, and Iâm glad he canât see the blush spreading over my face. âAh, but anyway, I wanted to talk to you about Sebasâ birthday.â
Itâs in about a week, and I was planning on ordering his gift today, so he definitely gets my attention with his statement.
âYeah,â I urge him to go on.
âSo, Iâm flying him to San Francisco as a surprise. I have a late game the day before, and weâre leaving right after.â
âReally? Thatâs awesome! I canât wait to see you guys.â
âYeah, so the day of, Iâm surprising him with his parents and brothers, and Bennett and Josie will be there, too. Iâm planning a party at my parentâs house, and I know itâs a Monday, and it may be a bit hard for you, so I wanted to give you a headâs up so you can maybe work the lunch shift that day?â
Iâm touched by how considerate of me heâs being, and my resentment gets smaller.
âThank you. Iâll make sure Iâm available. And hey, if your mom needs help with anything, if thereâs anything we can bring, please let me know.â
âThanks, Iâll tell her you offered, and if she needs anything sheâll probably call you.â
âPerfect, Iâm so excited, Adam. Thank you for this.
