Two days later, I’m miraculously still focusing on the positive, and my view of life is replaced by some trepidation when my phone vibrates with an unexpected call from Adam.

I like Adam. I swear I do.

But fact is, I’m an emotionally immature twenty-one-year-old man, and I resent him for taking my best friend away from me no matter how much I try not to.

It’s nothing personal, in fact, if anyone had to seduce Sebas away from Cavendish, I’m glad it was him. He’s a good guy.

It’s amazing to me that he’s so down to earth despite coming from one of the most famous families in the country.

Even little ol’ me, not knowing fuck-all about football, knew who the Darnells were before I came to Cavendish. I didn’t know Adam was here, but I knew they existed. If you consider I was an angry teenager with tunnel vision focused only on school, that’s saying something.

Still, Adam’s friendly, good-natured, funny, he’s fucking hot as hell, and he loves Sebas the way I believe my best friend deserves to be loved.

So I swallow my resentment, and I treat Adam with all the respect I have.

“Hi, Adam,” I make sure my words sound friendly.

“Hey, Glenn, I hear congratulations are in order.”

“Yeah, thanks,” I rub my neck, not knowing what else to say.

“Also, congratulations on your perfect score on the GRE,” he snorts.

“Wait, what? What were the first congratulations for then?” I’m so confused.

“For locking George down,” he cackles and gets a chuckle out of me because I do feel smug every time I look at Georgie and know he’s mine. At least for now.

“Yeah, I really got away with murder on that one, didn’t I?” I smile more genuinely now.

“I mean, the boy was straight!” His words make me snort, and I’m glad he can’t see the blush spreading over my face. “Ah, but anyway, I wanted to talk to you about Sebas’ birthday.”

It’s in about a week, and I was planning on ordering his gift today, so he definitely gets my attention with his statement.

“Yeah,” I urge him to go on.

“So, I’m flying him to San Francisco as a surprise. I have a late game the day before, and we’re leaving right after.”

“Really? That’s awesome! I can’t wait to see you guys.”

“Yeah, so the day of, I’m surprising him with his parents and brothers, and Bennett and Josie will be there, too. I’m planning a party at my parent’s house, and I know it’s a Monday, and it may be a bit hard for you, so I wanted to give you a head’s up so you can maybe work the lunch shift that day?”

I’m touched by how considerate of me he’s being, and my resentment gets smaller.

“Thank you. I’ll make sure I’m available. And hey, if your mom needs help with anything, if there’s anything we can bring, please let me know.”

“Thanks, I’ll tell her you offered, and if she needs anything she’ll probably call you.”

“Perfect, I’m so excited, Adam. Thank you for this.
