The Curtain Falls on Tull for Me
During all this time I had had a regular girlfriend called Stephanie, who had very big tits and a mum and dad who owned a pub. Well I ask you, what more could a guy ask for? Big tits, free grub and beer; what else was nearer to heaven?
For me this was true romance (I hadn’t got it all worked out that well, you see). My mum and dad, being old fashioned, had always been of the mind that a young man should be married and settled down by the age of 25 and they thought a lot of Stephanie. So marriage was discussed in spite of my by now extremely wild looks, profession and behaviour. I know her parents were slightly apprehensive, but they nevertheless took me to their bosom as their prospective son-in-law.
So with all this turmoil going on around my musical career and my personal life, I was very confused to say the least. A decision clearly had to be made one way or the other. At a particularly unhappy gig somewhere in the Midlands one evening I just turned round to the guys and said, ‘Look, I know this is not going to work anymore with me in the band. I don’t want to do the same things as you.’ But I still wanted to “make it so to say”. I did do one thing which didn’t go down well with any of the guys (and I don’t blame them for being pissed off with me either). I refused to go to a gig somewhere in the far North of England as I was really pissed off and tired of the whole crap game that was being played out between me Ian and Terry and, for different reasons, Glenn too. I just got in my van and drove home, went to bed and stayed there. Pathetic, I know, but that’s how I felt. Fed up, messed about, isolated and let down. This was an overreaction on my part, but there it was. I’m not going to apologise though because it was the only weapon in my armoury that I could think of to use as a tool of rebellion at the time. I’ve never felt very proud of that instance, but there you go. I don’t have any regrets about the actions, just a sadness that I’d let an audience down and behaved unprofessionally.
I should mention here that at that time I was befriended by the late and truly great Alexis Korner, of whom I had been a great fan for along time. We got together one evening at his old flat and over a smoke and a glass of wine I poured out my heart to him. Alexis knew exactly what I was going through and he became like a second dad to me with sound advice and he gave it in such a kind, caring manner because he was a family man as well as being the true original blues man in the UK.
