Ben

Traffic was light, considering that it was the beginning of a beautiful weekend. I-95 makes for an ugly, boring drive, but the bright sun cheered things up and brought out the green in the trees and grass along the way. Mom still lives in the house where Aaron and I grew up. It’s in Wainscott, on Long Island, and the car’s GPS said it would be about a six-and-a-half-hour trip.

Cayo and I are both big snackers, and after we stopped and bought enough munchies, candy, soda, and water for four people, we made good time. We shared the same taste in music, so we listened to a lot of our old favorites and talked occasionally. By silent mutual consent, we avoided the DC topics—the case, the flood, and my work situation.

We were just passing a sign for an upcoming rest area near Jamesburg, New Jersey, when Cay took my right hand and kissed it. “I know you’re a big tough stud and all, and you apparently have a cast iron bladder, but I need to stop and use the bathroom.”

I gave him a snarky, sideways look. “You always did have to pee like a little kid. Hold it, dude.”

He squeezed my hand. “Ben, it’s either stop so I can piss, or I’m going to ruin this nice leather upholstery and stink up your fancy Tesla.”

I snickered. “All right, put a cork in it. I’ll stop.”

“There’s my considerate lover.” He winked. “Maybe you’ll get a reward tonight.”

“Cocktease!”

He must have considered that a challenge because he proceeded to suck on my index finger until we reached the rest stop. I got so hard that I had to stand at the urinal for a while before my bladder would release, while he lingered at the sink, washing his hands and shooting sultry looks in my direction.

Back on the highway, I decided to broach one of the DC topics we’d avoided, the apartment situation. Cayo was busy singing along with Sam Smith, and I wasn’t about to interrupt. Cay may not have been the world’s greatest singer, but he had plenty of gusto. He managed to sing along with Sam as well as the background singers, and I enjoyed the show, complete with seated choreography. When the song ended, I turned off the music.

“Tired of Sam, or tired of me?”

“I could listen to you sing all day, but I want to put something out there.”

“Go for it,” he said, shifting in his seat.

Cayo had his left hand on the console, and since traffic was light, I put my right hand on top of it. “Remember when we talked about getting a new place together at the end of the year?”

“Sure. Still want to?”

“I do.” Needing to look away for what was coming next, I took my hand back and pulled out to pass a few cars. “But let’s do it now. Why wait?”

It was a small sigh, but I heard it. “I can’t, Ben. There are still three months left on my lease, and there’s a big penalty if I move out early.
