Eli debated the wisdom of returning to the Figgy Pudding. Bad enough that he’d gotten plowed last night on Jameson, no need to make it two nights in a row. And the idea of bison or moose meat didn’t sound good at all. Instead, he decided to try Yukon’s pizza. The snow had started up again, and he imagined it would be this way for the foreseeable future. He entered the restaurant, greeted by a wave of warmth. The interior looked like a lumberjack camp, roughly hewn picnic tables were covered with red and white checkered table clothes, fake candles centered in each one. A large cartoon image of Yukon Cornelius hung on one wall, the man standing tall with an ice pick resting on his shoulder. The place was cheery and welcoming. Eli could see why it was his daughter’s favorite.

His daughter. Eli knew there was a broad, goofy grin on his face, but he didn’t care. His daughter! He still had trouble believing it. Watching Sam play hockey had filled him with a strange sense of pride. Ridiculous since Hope was the one who’d raised her. Alone, no thanks to him.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t go back to change the past, no matter how much he wanted to. In fact, he was lucky he’d found out about Sam at all. Wouldn’t know squat if it wasn’t for George Linwood’s massive coronary. Again, not Hope’s fault. A quirk of fate? Maybe.

Letting Hope off the hook after Billy’s illness by turning down the chance to eat dinner with Sam and Hope hadn’t been easy, but he’d hoped that giving Hope a little space might help cool her anger. Yeah, maybe he shouldn’t have followed Hope, but he couldn’t regret watching his daughter in action.

Seven years ago, the thought of staying in one place, settling down to have a family would have filled him with panic. He’d wanted to see the world, make a difference. Make his mentor proud.

And he had. Battling Ebola had given him a new appreciation for life. Being forced to be isolated for twenty-one days after he’d returned stateside, to make sure he wasn’t contaminated, had caused an intense loneliness. He wasn’t used to that much time to sit and think. For the past seven years he’d been on overdrive pretty much all the time.

Accepting Caleb Morrey’s proposal to fill in for George had seemed a perfect change of pace. But he’d expected North Pole, Alaska to be small and backward, not charming and quirky.

Now that he was here, Eli was less and less enchanted with the thought of leaving. Not now.

A strange sense of peace came over him as he realized the truth. He wanted this full twelve weeks he’d been given here to get to know his daughter.

Granted, he still knew nothing about being a father. But maybe he could learn.

If Hope would give him a chance. To get to know Sam, but also to learn more about the confident woman Hope had become. He was still attracted to her, more so now than he had been seven years ago.
