This is the original entrance to the Olympic Stadium. The Olympic Games became so popular that a larger, more impressive temple with the Statue of Zeus was needed nearby.

German archaeologists made an expedition to Olympia in 1875. Over five summers, they discovered more fragments of the temple’s sculptures, as well as the remains of a pool in the floor that contained the olive oil for the statue of Zeus.5

The workshop of Phidias was found during the course of another excavation that took place during the 1950s. It was unearthed below the foundation of an early Christian church.6 Among the items found were a piece of an elephant’s tusk that was used for its ivory, plaster, instruments used for sculpting, molds made of clay, and an area for shaping bronze.

The Olympic stadium has been restored at the site. Little is left of the temple except for a few columns. The statue, which was most likely the most magnificent work at Olympia is gone. But it will still keep its place on the list of wonders of the ancient world.
