Matt

WE MET Sophia outside Mad Hatter’s, an outdoor restaurant with an Alice in Wonderland theme.

She greeted me with a huge smile and two fake kisses on my cheeks. “I cannot get over how good you look. I guess Tyler likes his men in shape, huh?”

I opened my mouth to protest, but Robbie jumped in first. “Everyone likes their men in shape, but I’m sure Matt works out because he likes being in shape.” Sophia looked over to Robbie, and he held out his hand. “I’m Robbie. Enchanté.”

Sophia took his hand and gave it a little shake. However, she didn’t say a word to Robbie, preferring to target me. “Afraid to meet me alone?”

“Matt isn’t afraid of anything but spiders and empty carbs. I’m just a friend here to support him.” He shot her another plastic smile that just dared her to challenge him.

“So you want to get a seat?” she asked me, trying her best to ignore Robbie altogether.

Which wasn’t going to work.

“Oh, we don’t have to wait,” he said, pulling a card out of his shirt pocket. The card sported a set of Mickey ears on it and looked like some kind of credit card.

The entrance consisted of a white wooden archway supporting two giant climbing roses, both crimson. Robbie held the card up to one of the vines, and a pair of eyes appeared.

“Oh, a special guest!” a voice purred. The Cheshire cat materialized among the leaves and flowers. I knew I was seeing more projection tricks, but damned if that cat didn’t look like it was just resting there.

“We need a seat for three,” Robbie said, putting the card away.

“Would you like three seats or one seat made for three?” it asked, leaning in with a grin.

“Table with three seats.”

“Huummppphhh,” the cat said, twitching its tail. “How mundane.” For several seconds it froze in place, probably issuing a set of orders to the wait station. Sure enough, a waiter showed up, covered in white body paint that made him a ten of hearts. “Show these three to their seats,” the cat told him. “They are VIP guests.”

The painted guy, who had the kind of body that looked good painted, half bowed and gestured. “If you all would follow me.”

As we followed I could see he was wearing a thong and boots, but that was about it. Everything else was painted on, revealing every single part of his body in great detail.

“You’re drooling,” Sophia said, elbowing me.

“No,” I said before I could stop myself. “I was just admiring the… paint job.”

She laughed, and I knew I had fallen right into one of her traps.

The card found us a table set on a leaf that appeared to hang at the end of a branch. We were seated away from and above everyone else. From my chair, I could see most of the restaurant.

“Here you go. When you’re ready, the caterpillar will take your order.”

As we sat down, the table lit up, showing us all menus. Balanced on the last two joints of its body was the caterpillar, evidently comfortable on the corner of the table.
