Chapter Five

Too worried over Lolly and disappointed by her performance, Lora left the arena where the final round of the evening was getting underway and went back to the trailer. She grabbed some cheese and sliced salami from the mini fridge, just enough to dim the gnawing hunger in her stomach and sat on the bench. She rested her head in her hands and battled disappointment. This was so not how she expected this event to go and now she’d be going home to try and figure out what to do next.

Badger’s times told her something she’d worried about and feared for a while now. He’d peaked and while he’d make anyone at a lower level one hell of a barrel horse, where she competed, he was outclassed. For half a second, she debated about putting him up for sale. No. She’d never do that. He’d make a great lesson horse, not to mention help younger students gain confidence. In that, he was worth his weight in gold and then some.

She sighed. It’d been a while since she’d had such a disappointing show. She hoped Lolly recovered quickly, maybe just a strain that would take a few days to resolve. She’d wrapped it in an ice pack this afternoon and again this evening.

The door to the living quarters opened and the smell of Los Taquitos filled the air. Lora’s stomach growled. She heard the rustling of bags a moment before Clint walked in.

“I took an Uber and got you some dinner. I wasn’t sure what we had left here.” He set the bags on the table and pulled out a large container of chips and opened the salsa. “A three-taco platter okay? They were really busy tonight.” He handed her the container.

Her mouth watered. “That’s perfect. Thank you.” She opened the lid and inhaled the spicy aroma.

He opened another container of lettuce with tiny tubs of sour cream and then sat down with a large beef burrito. “I hope you don’t mind—”

She waved her hand, cutting off whatever he was going to say. “Not at all. This is… amazing.” Indeed, unless she showed with her students, she tended to fend for herself when it came to meals. Having someone bring her food was absolutely freaking amazing. She picked up a taco and bit into the crunchy shell.

“How’s Lolly’s leg looking?” he asked after taking several bites of his dinner.

She nodded. “Swollen. I’ll know more for sure tomorrow when we get home. I may need to call the vet out on Monday.” She frowned.

“I’m sorry. That was rough and I heard several competitors complaining about the ground.” Clint reached for one of the last tubs of sour cream. “Do you want this?”

“I’m good. Go for it.” Lora replied. She finished her first taco and grabbed the second one. If having dinner with him at the restaurant was a date like experience, then eating in the living quarters of her trailer was more intimate. She became aware of his every moment. The way he enjoyed his meal, a man with hearty appetites.
