25. The Festival of the Wolf
They left the car half a mile away and walked to the center of Yellowtooth Village, erected in the gardens of the museum of history, which offered a large open space. Catherine had forgotten how much work went into the wolf festivals. The place looked like a medieval Danish town. Striped tents flourished like mushrooms. Fire illuminated the area. This was how some of her ancestors must have lived many, many years ago. The scent of beer and salty meat inundated her nostrils. They walked to one of the entrances. A man disguised as a werewolf with a top hat greeted them.
âThatâll be ten per person,â he said.
âIâve got tickets already,â Catherine said, handing two tickets to the man.
âWhat are your names?â
âCathy and Charles,â Charles said.
The man wrote down the names and gave them name tags to hang around their necks.
âWelcome to the Festival of the Wolf,â he said, howling.
Catherine looked at Charles, feeling the excitement that the night promised. He smiled back at her.
âI enjoyed meeting your friends. You and Anne have an almost psychic connection. You can almost guess beforehand what the other one will say,â Charles said, pulling Catherine by the waist to let two Vikings on horseback ride by. So many people had come to the festival that Charles held Catherine close to him so they wouldnât lose one another in the crowd.
A lit triangle lured the pair in. Inside a giant tent, they had cushions on the floor where people could sit and talk, eat or drink. They sat down next to each other.
âWell, weâve known each other since we were very young. We were part of a group of friends of which only the two of us remain.â Catherine became uneasy as she spoke. Tears varnished her eyes, giving her a glacial stare.
Charles realized someone important was missing and inquired while softly placing his hands on her cheeks.
âWas your late husband part of this group? Does thinking about him make you sad?â
Catherine hadnât realized how melancholic sheâd become, but Charlesâs touch gave her warmth. Not really identifying the source of her sadness, she responded affirmatively. It was easier than explaining the tragic events of the last summer they all spent together: Anne, Catherine, her late husband, and Jimmy, the young man who stole her heart.
Charles would not let this opportunity to get closer to Catherine dissolve. Her life intrigued him.
âTell me what youâre thinking. You can trust me,â Charles told Catherine.
Catherine burst into tears as her past reappeared. Charles held her tightly and slowly stroked her hair.
âI want to hear your story,â Charles pressed Catherine. This Frank guy could turn out to be âback from the deadâ and prone to create trouble. Catherineâs tears were warning signs. Charles needed to know what he was up against in case of an encounter. If Frank was alive and dangerous, he needed to stay close to Catherine to make sure he could protect her. To do that, he had to get rid of Charles and take over as Greg.
