Chapter 18

Getting to the other side of the trees was a desperately needed freedom. My body still ached from the impacts and wounds the Jabberwock had left. Though it was hard to say if I was more annoyed by that thing trying to kill me or that Kitten had facilitated it. Alice was lucky she was getting such a lead on me. It would be a minute before I caught up, and I was starting to think that was by the Cheshire Cat’s design more than it was my own. He’d possibly gone a bit rogue on this one.

Though it hardly mattered. As long as I found her before she met with the Queen, it would be fine. I was certain Mau wouldn’t rush things. We were more or less in this together precisely because we were all in it for ourselves.

First, and foremost, it was much more important I checked in with the twins. Mau hadn’t specified whether or not she’d moved on, but there was still an entirely likely chance that they might still have her in their bed. While I’d never been twisted in their sheets, I’d heard enough from Mau to know it could be… a hard place to leave.

But that was part of the test. Many an Alice had been left a broken, weeping pile after the Twin’s magic degraded their minds into empty sex dolls. I’d seen enough Alices end their journey there, and the punishment for that was sometimes more than even I could take pleasure in.

When I surmounted the hill to the Hall of Mirrors, the building itself was notably shabby compared to its usual cottage-like charm. It was falling apart, with boards over the windows, overgrown yet browned ivy snaking around the walls, and holes and splinters in the door. Odd. If they were switching up their illusions, I couldn’t understand why they would pick something like… uh… this.

I opened a door that was barely holding onto its hinges, expecting to walk through the usual montage of the Queen’s shame, with the short vignettes of her fucked up life, but instead of drugs, blood, chains, and the Hall of Mirrors… there was nothing behind the door at all anymore. On the other side, I was back where I started, with no trace of the illusion to spare. Even the dilapidated cottage I’d originally entered had disappeared.

“Finn. Tynan. Where the fuck are you?” I snapped, immediately annoyed by this confusing turn of events.

“What took you so long?” An irritated voice answered back. I turned to face Tynan, the darker of the two men, who stood against a lone Tumtum tree in the meadow. I preferred him to his more delicate and over-sensitive brother. Tynan had been killed one too many times, and Finn hadn’t been killed enough, in my opinion.

“I’ll let you guess.” I rolled my eyes and placed a hand on my hip. It wasn’t like there was ever any question as to who had it out for me in Wonderland.
