Ruff Day

The day of Quinn’s baby shower arrives, and I’d like to say I’m running around like a chicken with my head cut off, but I’m not nearly that coordinated. For a type-A personality, I’m surprisingly disorganized. I have Zach hanging decorations. The girls are arranging the few games we have set up. I’m spinning around in circles, wondering what to do next.

I had no clue that planning a baby shower was so much work, or I may have suggested just renting a banquet hall. To make things easier, I hired the same caterers we used for our wedding only a few months ago and contacted my friend Desirea from Desirea’s Sweets to provide a cake. She made the cakes for both mine and Quinn’s weddings, so she’s overjoyed when I tell her Quinn is expecting. She creates a sugary, three-tiered masterpiece that’s surely to provide me with breakfast for the next few days. Really, it’s a raspberry and lemon cake, so it’s practically a muffin.

While the caterers finish getting the food set up, I run upstairs to shower and change. I’ve been stress-cleaning and decorating all morning and need to freshen up before guests arrive.

My dress is a cobalt blue vintage swing dress, which is presentable, but comfortable enough to perform my hosting duties. I figured since I’m guessing Quinn is having a boy, blue was the obvious choice.

Zach is also on “Team Boy,” but I think it may only be because he refuses to wear pink.

My mother Alanna, sisters Noa and Lexi, and their kids are the first to arrive. I greet everyone with a hug, rustling little Oscar’s hair and picking him up for a thorough squeeze. I missed my little snuggle buddy. My family all came early to ask if I needed any help. Thankfully, everything is set up and ready, so I have a few minutes to visit with them before the chaos starts.

Chelsea disappears with Caleb and Sophie, while Isla takes off with Lexi’s three kids and Bond. The festivities will probably bore them, so I told them they can entertain themselves elsewhere.

Moments later, the guests of honour arrive. Tyler parks their black SUV and hops out to run around and open Quinn’s door. When she exits the vehicle, she looks more beautiful than ever in a dusty mauve, knee-length wrap dress that hugs her rounded stomach. She styled her blonde hair in beachy waves that look effortless, but probably took some time to achieve. Her skin is glowing and her blue eyes radiate happiness. Tyler leads Quinn by the hand up the few steps to our front door. I open it without waiting for them to knock.

Quinn squeals with delight as she wraps me in a hug. We used to see each other often, but now, with life getting in the way, those visits are getting less frequent. Zach and Tyler do the typical “bro” greeting with the handshake-slash-hug-slash-back-slap move. I love seeing the two of them together because they light up each other’s eyes in ways a wife just can’t.
