Final Preparations
âWhere did you get to last night?â Valerie said as Lucy sheepishly pulled back her bedroomâs curtain and stepped into the little living area where her parents were drinking coffee and eating toast. âWe went through the cave just for a little look and when we came back youâd vanished. If it hadnât been for your text message I might have thought you drowned.â
âI wasnât feeling the holiday spirit,â Lucy said. âI decided to walk home.â
âWasnât it dark?â
âYeah, but thereâs only one road, and it wasnât that far.â
âWhat happened? Was it that heinous woman?â
âWhat woman?â
âOh, Lucy, donât give me that. You know. I saw her talking to you, and when I got back I checked her Instagram account.â
âYou didnâtââ
Valerie gave a grim smile. âI had to change my passwordâitâs scienceislife1, just in case I dieâbut I wanted to see what she had been posting.â
Lucy sat down next to Alan, who was watching the Spotlight weather news. âI donât want to think about it.â
âYou know what she posted, donât you?â
Lucy gave a despondent nod. The picture was a brutal shot of a pristine Elizabeth draped over a far less photogenic Lucy, one eye half closed as though it was jippy and a piece of hamburger visible through her partially open mouth. The caption read: I found her again! The barking girl! Could this be the truth behind the Beast of Bodmin Moor myth, or is she just a crazy local? Guesses in the comments below.
âSheâs getting a piece of my mind when I next see her,â Valerie said. âNo one humiliates my little girl like that.â
Alan glanced back. âDonât mess with your mother,â he said. âSheâll make that woman wish she was never born. Iâve wished I was never born a couple of times, havenât I, love? Like that time I spilt coffee over your new work uniform?â
âDonât bring that up again,â Valerie growled, snapping at the end of the sentence like a dog with a short fuse.
âSee what I mean?â Alan said.
Lucy sighed. âJust leave it. Iâm not a teenager. And I donât remember you sticking up for me much back then.â
âAs a teenager you have to fight your own battles,â Valerie said. âItâs character-building. Studies have shown that children with overbearing parents end up in lower-paid professions to those who have a sense of internal motivation developed by a hands-off approach.â
âIâm not exactly raking it in,â Lucy said, taking a piece of toast her mother held out. âThere are three other travel agents on the same street, so commission isnât exactly lying around like used notes in bags.â
âYou chose a profession which rewards hard work,â Valerie said. âThatâs what Iâm talking about.â
âAnd has really good travel discounts for staff,â Lucy answered. âWhatâs the plan for today, anyway?â
âWe have to be up at the cricket ground by ten oâclock,â Alan said. âIn time for the official opening ceremony.â He grinned, puffing his chest out like a proud rooster. âAs the main sponsor, I have to make a speech.â
âA proud moment for sure,â Valerie said, giving Alan a wink.
