Paul America, star of “My Hustler,” who also filmed a couple of sequels (unreleased), was “the one true love” in the life of my wild, beautiful cousin, Colette O’Sullivan. Tragically, she “fell” out of a NYC window in her 20s. Paul was killed by a car at the age of 38.

Danny Fields: Andy said, (mimicking) “Oooh, there are so many people. How am I going to get them all into one frame?” Paul said, “Well, all you do this thing called panning. You slowly move the lens from one side to the other until you get them.” And Andy said, “Ooooh, I tried that and it was all jerky, all stops and starts.” Paul said, “You must learn to do it gently, so it’s smooth and the motion of your muscles does not come out on the screen.” From that moment on, Paul was Andy’s technical “let’s make real movies” kind of person. And Chuck (Wein) was there at the same time. I can’t imagine they loved each other. That’s okay. I can’t imagine even that they loved anybody, except everybody loved Edie.

Victor Bockris: “Girl of the Year” … The very title kind of set you up for the fall, but on the other hand he probably realized, the kind of thing he was doing, he would need to have a new “Girl of the Year” because of the pace of pop culture. And because of the fact that he’d be working them to death, and they wouldn’t survive for much longer than that anyway. So that’s basically what happened. He got Baby Jane, he got Ultra, he got Edie, where for the first time you saw the rise and fall of the “Girl of the Year.” He got Nico, then he got International Velvet. Some of them have much shorter spans than others.

Mary Woronov: The next thing was International Velvet, Susan Bottomly. So, Susan, you know, is going to be a model, this is her big thing. This is a woman with ninety-two thousand eyelashes. She could barely open her eyes. She said to Andy, “Listen I’m getting this call, and we’ll have to stop filming.” We were in a bedroom in the Chelsea Hotel, and were going to have to stop filming, so she can get this call. And I just thought, “Fuck you, bitch!” We’re attempting this movie; she doesn’t know what she’s doing, and I was pissed off. Then the telephone rings and I wouldn’t let her answer the phone. She flipped out! When nobody did anything to stop the movie, she left. Then, she came back! That sort of heightened and made it this S&M scene. But here they think, “It’s not supposed to happen.” Hey, it’s called improv.

Oh Mary, you are just so mean. But I can see your point, after watching “Chelsea Girls” (all six hours). We used the footage of
