I watch some TVâa documentary about Hemingway. Itâs probably excellent but I doze for a while twenty minutes in and then canât really pick up the thread. Iâve never read any Hemingway. I feel as though I should but Iâve never quite got around to it. What I do gather from the program is that he was a prick. Talented though. Iâm confident that I have the prick part nailed down; the talent bit is proving more elusive. I let the wave of self-pity have its way with meâitâs addictive and oddly pleasurable after allâthen make my bed on the sofa and fall asleep.
The voice that wakes me is light and familiar. âI like what youâve done with the place.â
I sit upright, cricking my neck. âHolly. Jesus Christ.â Thereâs little light and I can sense rather than see her. âWhat are you doing?â
âThe front door was open.â
âThatâs not an answer. I mean, what the actual fuck?â I struggle into a sitting position. The air is fetid and my mouth tastes foul.
âYouâre not a bastard. Itâs not your fault that I am ⦠how I am.â Iâm getting used to the light now and I can see Hollyâs outline. Sheâs knelt on the floor, close to the sofa, her head angled towards me. I claw my way through the outrage and disorientation and try to formulate a response. I become aware of the rankness of my scent and breath. âYou did abandon me, though, Dan. You just did.â
âI know, Holly. I know.â
âBut the weightâ¦well, that was Mum. She was always on at me about it, ever since I was little.â
âIt was neverâ¦â
âI know.â Her voice had become soft but it sharpens now as she cuts me off. âI know, Dan. I guess I wasnât quite enough, thatâs the long and short of it. And I canât blame you for that, can I? Not really.â
âLook â¦â I feel her hand, cool against my forearm, stilling me.
âShe called me a fat cow. Can you believe that?â Actually I can. âSaid Iâd never get a man looking like I did. Said that was why you left. So it was something, wasnât it? Something I could control. A way of shutting her up.â
âOkay,â I say slowly. I stand and flick on a lamp. Itâs a little after five. Holly blinks up at me. Sheâs wearing the same clothes as earlier. âIâm sorry. For everything. Really. But you canât do this. You canât just â¦â
âI thought you needed to know. It wasnât your fault.â
âSo it was your mumâs â¦â
She cuts me off again as she stands. âNo. Iâm slim because of her. I suppose I should thank her, really.â
âThen what theâ¦â
âItâs your brother, Dan. Heâs the bastard.â Her head flicks from side to side as she surveys the wreckage of this awful room.
A chill forms inside me. âMy brotherâs dead, Holly.â
âWell, I know that,â she says as she faces me. Sheâs too close again and her smile is too wide. âIâm not silly.â
