Chapter Thirteen

I’m standing under the pavilion in front of the school waiting for Brayden. As soon as he sees me, he takes off running.

“No running!” says a teacher who is helping direct students to the bus. He is a big, burly man with a mustache and a balding head.

Brayden puts on the brakes and comes to a stop right in front of me. “Hey!”

“Hey, little man.” I put my hand on the top of his head. “Did you have a good day?”

“It was okay,” he says, breathing in and out deeply from his sprint. He is exaggerating a little. I know he has more energy than that.

“Ready to go to Ben’s game?”

“Yeah.” He nods his head vigorously. “Can I get nachos and cheese?”

I chuckle. “Sure.”

We start walking toward the middle school, which is just down the road. The high school is at the top of the hill. It makes an easy commute for families with kids in each school.

“Ms. Cain said to tell you hi.” Brayden swings his arms back and forth. “I told her we were going to Ben’s basketball game today.”

“Oh, really?”

“Yep. I told her she could come too.”

“What did she say?” I have a twinge of excitement thinking she may come. It would be nice to see her again.

“Um.” Brayden looks up to the sky, as if trying to remember the conversation. “She said she couldn’t make it, but she hopes Ben plays good and to tell you hello.”

“You and Ms. Cain are buddies, huh?”

“She’s nice. I got to help hand out papers today.”

Sarah is that kind of teacher. She really cares about her students. It means a lot to me that she’s helping look after Brayden.

We walk into the middle school, which enters at the main hall. Straight ahead is the gymnasium. We take the ramp to the right leading to the lunchroom, so we can get Brayden his nachos and soda. They have the curtains open along the left side of the lunchroom so people can watch the game while snacking. They don’t like anyone to eat or drink in the gym since they put in a new floor.

We get Brayden’s food and sit close to the opening to watch Ben. There aren’t many people in the stands. Ben is warming up on the court in his white uniform with blue and red stripes down the side of this shorts. Ben is taller than most of the other boys on his team. I see him looking around for us. I wave when he looks our way. Brayden does too. Ben sees us and smiles but doesn’t wave back. He has a reputation to uphold. The whistle blows and the game begins while Brayden crunches on his chips, getting cheese all over his fingers.

“There’s Ms. Cain.” Brayden points behind me. I turn to see Sarah walking our way. She has a red and blue backpack in her hand.

“Hi,” she says, stopping at our table.

“Hi.” I smile.

“Brayden, I think this belongs to you.” She holds up his Spider-Man backpack.
