EPILOGUE
Slithertick - Somewhere in the Korodo Empire
I growled in relief as the last of the seeds were finally planted, my claws sore from all the hard work. It should prove to be a good harvest this year, that was what they promised me when I moved into the open wilderness this far north. No cities for miles on end and only a small village to the east of me for all our needs.
I needed to find a way to harness all the water that rained here. The weather was far more extreme thatâs what I was used to. It practically rained every other day but not enough to drown the crops or cause any harm to them. That saved me much time in watering them myself.
I grabbed my hoe to shape the soil for a moment; I wanted to make sure it was perfect before I headed back inside.
A buzz caught my ears as the sun darkened. That was strange. It would not be dusk for a few more hours. The buzz became an annoying hum as I looked up at the sky.
A giant⦠ball? It sailed through the sky, sounding like it was almost shrieking at me as it sailed past. I could feel my blood turn cold as it crashed into the mountains to the north and destroyed them instantly. The ball continued onwards, disappearing over the horizon, the only evidence that it was there at all was a giant hole in the mountain.
âWhat was that dear?â my moon said as she came out of the cottage. She carried my young one in her arm while two others followed behind her tail.
I stared at the hole in the mountain and made my decision. There was no way I was staying here now.
âPack up your things, we are leaving for the south cities,â I said as I dropped my hoe. I walked over to grab the wagon in the small barn.
âWhat? But what about our life here? And what happened to the mountain?â my moon asked. She looked just as startled as I was when she gazed at the north.
âWe are to start a new life in the south. I donât know what that was, and I donât want to know,â I said as I gripped the wagon and pulled it up alongside the cottage. I grabbed each young one under the arms. They giggled and shook as I gripped them and deposited each onto the wagon.
My claws ached still, as I should have rested now, some part of me wanted to stay and pretend that I didn't see what I saw.
But the Gods were angry at this land and I would not risk my young ones or my moon to chase my farming dream.
âRemember, my father lives in the south, I can look for work with him,â I said as I drew close to my moon, who looked forlorn at leaving everything behind.
âCan we not talk this through, life was good here. The young ones will enjoy living in nature,â my moon said.
