Chapter 19
Pearroc sorrowed for the dimming of Camisseâs eyes. He remembered how she had braced after her complimented her. His hesitation to mention that her brother also dined here would have also killed the life in her eyes. He vowed to bring back her eyesâ brightness.
Her gaze down, watching the path that her finger traced on the tablecloth, Camisse was answering his question. Her honesty throughout this meal intrigued him. Pearroc could not decide the reason she had chosen to offer her trust. Unused to human manipulation and deceit, he deeply appreciated her open truths.
And he wondered if the trust she granted to the Fae at Chanerro Pass had created the foundation for her successful command.
But why grant him that kind of trust? Unless she had somehow guessed he was Fae?
Can Camisse see past my glamour? Or is her trust an instinctive recognition that I am Fae?
He was simultaneously perturbed and exhilarated. And he had missed the first bit of her answer. Pearroc hurried to catch up.
âI guessed my motherâs path,â she was sharing. âI knew Raigeis would follow her as clan leader. He was already standing at her right hand, helping her more than my father ever did. She said thenâand she continues to repeat itâthat I would grow into my powers. I have been fifteen years on the border, in daily use with the little spells, constantly around power. I have not grown into any powers. And she ages. Most of the family acts as if Letheina is immortal.â
âAnd the choice of the sword?â
âYou are a bulldog with a stick. Swordplay was part of our lessons, early on. Some continue it into adult-hood. I chose to be one of those.â
âYou are a woman. You will never had the strength to counter a man. Oh, you have learned to compensate; you used your tricks on me. But once your opponent knows thoseâ.â He stopped, for a smile gleamed in her eyes then curved her mouth, and Pearrocâs interest in her deepened even more for this woman that Drakon claimed as his daughter. âYou have a trick you didnât show me yesterday morning. What is it? I think it gives you strength.â
âAm I so easily read? It is a trick, a childâs trick. Do you remember that childhood game, when the boys show off their strength by lifting the girls?â
He didnât know it. The Fae didnât play such games.
âI didnât like it. I didnât like Raigeis pushing me to get me to stand in a certain place. My uncle calls it âgroundingâ. Setting myself so firmly that no one can lift me or move me. He was pleased when I could do it. He said it was instinctive.â
Grounding? She described a spell using Earth power. âYou linked with the earth, and it gave your strength. Fire and Earth are Drakonâs elements. Can you do any other Earth spells?â
âI never tried to. My tutors scoffed at it. I told you this.â
âYou never tried? You spark Fire, but you are not trained in it.
