Chapter Sixteen
Charlie took charge of their next date.
âBowling? Are we going in here?â Erica asked as they stopped outside the building.
Charlie wasnât sure how Erica would feel about bowlingânothing about her screamed that she was the bowling type. But she didnât look horrifiedâmore like intrigued. âWe are.â
âIâve never done it before,â Erica said.
âYouâve never been bowling?â
âNo.â Erica looked down at her feet. âDo I have to wear those funny shoes?â
Charlie looked down too. âI think those heels might be considered a safety risk. I donât even know how you walk in them, let alone do anything else.â She laughed at Ericaâs horrified face. âI have to wear the funny shoes too. Donât be such a snob.â
âI am a snob, self-admittedly. Itâs bred into me, Iâm powerless against it. You already know this.â
âI do. But youâre my snob, so itâs fine.â Oops. That had just slipped out. âCome on. Letâs go get you fitted for your funny shoes,â she added quickly in an attempt to glaze over the comment.
Ericaâs amused look told Charlie that her glazing hadnât worked. âAm I now?â
Of course, Erica pulled her on her slip. At least she hadnât argued with the statement because the truth was, she already knew that she wanted Erica to be hers, even if she hadnât meant to come right out and say it. Charlie dragged her by the hand through the front door. âDonât distract me. Shoes. Letâs go. I hadnât even thought about it, but now Iâm dying to see your snobby little expression when you have to put them on.â
Charlie paid at the desk and was handed two pairs of bowling shoes. She and Erica wore the same size, which made it easier.
She held them up. âBlack with fluorescent pink swirls, or white with purple and green stripes?â
Erica glared at her. âHow many strange, sweaty feet have been in those already?â
âThey wash them, Iâm sure.â Charlie looked between the two pairs and then looked at Erica. âI feel like youâre pink and swirly.â
Erica still glared but the corner of her mouth quirked up. She reached out and took the pair from Charlie, holding them out with the tip of her finger and her thumb like they might jump and bite her at any second. âOne snobby expression, coming right up.â
They sat side by side on the bench as they put on their rented footwear. It took Charlie twice as long because she kept pausing to laugh at the disgusted faces that Erica was pullingâbut to her credit, she put them on anyway. Charlie didnât believe her protests for a second. Erica was more excited than she let on.
To further prove that point, Erica stood up and gave a ta da motion as she twirled her foot round and round. âI think youâre right. I am pink and swirly.â
âI told you.â She stood up too. âHow about me? Am I green and stripey?â
Erica looked her up and down. âYouâre gorgeous.â She leaned in and kissed her cheek. âNow, teach me how to bowl.
