Chapter Fourteen

Guilt was an old friend of Cam’s.

When he and Bex had returned from the bar the previous night, she’d barraged him with questions. How had he been able to fight those men? Why didn’t he have a scratch on him? Did he have military training? First he said it was adrenaline, but she didn’t accept that. He’d told her they’d talk about it later, but he knew it would only keep her quiet for so long.

Bex was too smart and too determined to accept the easy out.

He wanted to tell her the truth, but the truth was like a fairy tale from childhood that was hard for him to remember anymore. Once upon a time he’d been a great man. What was he now?

At the hospital he found his way to Hugo’s room. The old man was asleep, but Cam was in no particular hurry. He wheeled his chair up next to the metal frame of the hospital bed and crossed his arms over his chest, ready to wait until Hugo woke up. The antiseptic smells and hushed noises of the ward were a nice change from the vacuum of silence he’d gotten used to at home.

For the first time in a long time, Cam slept without dreaming.
