Bad Blood

“Will you stop checking that thing?” Gabriel’s tone was chiding but patient. “Just because she hasn’t contacted you doesn’t mean that something is wrong.”

Fiona nodded and tucked her phone away. She hadn’t heard from Eleanor since the gathering with the Coalition. The battery on the listening device had died shortly after Festus’s little speech, and Eleanor hadn’t called or emailed since.

The radio silence was stressing Fiona out, but shopping for baby gear had been her idea, so it was only fair that she give it her full attention.

“How do you work this thing?” Gabriel grumbled.

Fiona had to stifle a laugh. He had a baby carrier clipped around his waist and was attempting to thread his arms through the tangle of straps. The carrier snapped around the back, but Gabriel was trying to pull it on like a T-shirt.

“I think this clips here,” said Fiona, trying hard to keep a straight face as she fixed the straps for him. The muscles of her mouth ached from holding in her laughter, but she didn’t want to do anything else that might provoke his ire.

“This is ridiculous,” Gabriel muttered, pulling the mesh panel forward and untwisting one of the nylon straps. “A base-jumping harness isn’t this complicated.”

“That’s because it’s for holding a baby, not jumping out of an airplane.”

“With this many straps, you should be able to jump out of an airplane with a baby.”

Fiona snorted but quickly schooled her expression to make sure they were on the same page. “Please don’t be jumping out of an airplane with our children.”

Gabriel made a noncommittal noise in his throat. “This only holds one anyway.”

Fiona studied his face to make sure he was kidding and turned her attention back to the double stroller. She’d been waffling over it for the past twenty minutes, but she truly had no idea what made a stroller any good. “What do you think of this one?”

“I dunno,” Gabriel sighed. “It looks pretty much like all the other strollers.”

“This one has four cup holders.”

“That’s three cupholders too many.”

“You can never have too many cupholders!”

Gabriel gave her a look that said he’d about reached his limit and bent to look at the price tag. His eyebrows disappeared into his shaggy hair, and he gave the tag a flick. “Isn’t this the sort of thing you’d get at your baby shower?”

Fiona sighed. “I’m not sure there’s going to be a baby shower. Daphne was bugging me about it, and Elle said she’d throw me one. But now . . .”

“Now she’s being held prisoner in Sigrid’s fortress preparing for a supernatural war.” Gabriel made a face. “Yeah. I can see how your baby shower wouldn’t be her top priority.”

Hot tears burned in Fiona’s throat, but she swallowed to keep them at bay. She wasn’t going to break down in the middle of the store — or dwell on the fact that her pregnancy was turning out to be nothing like she’d imagined.

She couldn’t think about Eleanor or her shower or how she was about to bring two babies into the world when she had no idea what she was doing.
