Growing Up

“So, you are telling me that Callum and Piper are a couple?” Celeste and I were lying in bed, and I had just told her about our son, the romantic.

“Yes, my love, and he was very sweet when he asked her.”

“Are you worried about this?”

“No. Should I be worried?”

“With all that is going on, my love, a romance could mean they move fast. What if they start… you know?”

I chuckled, “Are you talking about them having sex?”

“Yes!” she said and then covered her face.

“Darling, can you look at me?” She uncovered her face and looked at me. “Baby, he is only sixteen, but he will live hundreds of years; he will make mistakes. He will fall in love, and he will do all of this while growing. Sex is a part of growing up. I will talk to him about protection and supply it. You can lay down some rules if you have to but let him alone.” She lay in my arms, and I held her. “I listened to his friends today, and he is a good boy. He helps them with schoolwork, has great work ethics and he loves that girl. So much he spoke a long life into her soul. Brought her back to life and gave her gifts that no other human has. It was bound to happen.”

She was quiet for a moment and then she said, “I know, and you are right. I will lay down some rules, but I will let it go.” She took a deep breath, “When he was growing up, I had Mary to talk with about these things. I could just imagine how excited she would be right now.”

That stung me in the heart. I should have been here to talk to her about his growing up. I should have always been the person she leaned on. I failed in so many ways. I wished I had that time back.

“Mary had to be great. When I saw her at the gate, she was smiling so big. She was beautiful.”

“You saw Mary?”

“Yes, when Piper died. She was waiting on her.”

“Yep, that sounds like Mary. I miss her all the time. Like tonight when Maggy put me in a group chat with twenty other ladies about how handsome you were.”

“Twenty?”

“Yeah, this is a small town, and handsome men are big around here. They all want to meet you and said I should throw a party. Introduce you to the town. Maggy said she would take off work for it, and Maggy never takes off.” She laughed. “Plus, you tipped her two hundred dollars. She was over the moon.”

“Oh, yeah she started praising Jesus and all.”

“I know how much you love that.” She laughed and I shook my head.

“We could have an engagement party?” I said and Celeste drew in so much air, I feared the room had no oxygen.

“Are you serious?”

“Very. I have never wanted to be with someone so much. I love you, baby. And I hope that I can make up the time I was gone.
