JASMINE

Tugging at the sash of my coat, I tighten it around my body as a chilly gust of wind blows across the parking lot of Thorn Restaurant. To say this night is not ending how I expected is an understatement. All my fantasies of Troy and I rekindling the chemistry we’d shared before the fire at TimberLuxe and Darren’s presentation at the Retired Healers Network went up in a poof of smoke the minute Troy revealed his true self.

I should’ve known he was too good to be true.

The man had everything going for him—highly educated, resume lined with executive-level positions at numerous companies, and hotter than August in Texas.

But it’s clear why he’s a bachelor and might be for the rest of his lousy life.

Bouncing from one cramped foot in a sequined stiletto heel to the other, I can’t stop myself from ranting. “In all the time we’d spent together, and admittedly, when I go back and count up the hours, it wasn’t many. Still, he never showed that elitist, judgmental side. If he had, trust me, I never would’ve given him a second glance. I don’t care how …” I pause, realizing it’s not a good idea to tell one man who is interested in me how hot I think another guy is.

Idris is bent over, half submerged in his late model Camry which has seen better days about a decade ago. He lifts a seemingly endless mound of football equipment, discarded jerseys, and sneakers from the front seat.

“Do you know he had the nerve to say he was doing me a favor by ignoring the fact …” I pause, emphasizing the words to do air quotes Idris can’t see. “That I have criminals in my family. Normally, a man with his pedigree wouldn’t continue to date someone whose family had done time. Can you believe that?” I press my hands on my hips.

Idris gives me a suitable grunt to continue.

“I’m disgusted it crossed my mind to explain the extenuating circumstances that landed my brother and father in prison. Hendrix was a teenager when he made a foolish and immature mistake. He did his time, and the minute he left prison, he turned his life around. My brother may be an ex-con, but he’s also a successful mechanic and businessman. He works for no one but himself running his auto body shop. I’m so proud of him. But do you think any of that mattered to Troy?”

Idris backs out of the passenger seat, his face covered by the mound in his arms. His head moves from side to side, and I know he feels what I’m going through. I don’t need to second guess that Idris understands me and would never say something so disrespectful about my family. I’ve had too many conversations with Idris over the past couple of weeks to know he’s entirely the opposite of that jerk, Troy. Idris is more like Darren, which makes him a much better match for me than Troy could ever be.
