The mid-1970s were still a time of very high mortality. Infants born with the more severe defects, such as hypoplastic left heart syndrome, were simply left to die, without so much as an attempt being made to repair them. Very small babies couldn’t be operated on at all, and parents knew to expect the worst. In those days the quality of a repair and the quality of life following surgery were not even discussed; the goal was merely for the patient to survive the operation, make it out of the O.R. This situation began to change in 1972, after Robert Gross, the founding father of pediatric heart surgery, retired from Children’s Hospital in Boston. His replacement was a surgeon named Aldo Castañeda.
