CHAPTER NINETEEN

HUDSON

“So, how exactly does this work?” Willa asks.

The man sitting across from us is named Mike. He has a thick head of dark, graying hair and a five-o’clock shadow that tells us of his long hours. Four empty paper coffee cups rest on his desk, each of them varying degrees of crushed, next to the one he’s drinking from.

It’s been a little over a week since Willa suggested finding a private investigator, and apparently, this rather frazzled-looking gentleman is our best hope.

He grumbles and downs the remaining liquid from the paper coffee cup, crushing it in his palm and adding it to the growing pile.

The trash can next to his desk is overflowing with fast-food bags and more crushed paper cups.

This guy is living on caffeine and a dream.

He wipes a wrinkled hand over his mouth, clearing his throat.

“I’ll dig into the subject’s past. Her history. Marriages. Employment. Childhood. Her credit. Any criminal history. All known associates. I’ll look for any connections between the three of you besides the obvious. I’ll also put a tail on her, see her comings and goings. We’ll change up vehicles and schedules every day so she doesn’t suspect a thing. I want to know where she’s spending her time. What’s important to her. Who’s important to her. Basically, anything there is to know about her, I’ll find out.”

He nudges a stack of papers across his desk to clear space for him to make notes. “I’ll bill you by the hour. You can set a cap if you need to or let me work as much as is necessary. Up to you.”

“And how quickly do you think you can have all of that to us?” Willa asks. “All of the answers?”

“If I work on it nonstop? A week or two, most likely. Maybe a month. I’ll send you updates as I come across new information, so when we’ve found something useful, we can stop then. But I’ll keep going and keep digging as long as you authorize me to. Until you’ve found what it is you’re looking for.”

“And you’re sure she won’t know about it? This woman, Ms. Cromwell, she’s powerful. She has unlimited resources and seems to have eyes everywhere.”

He gives her a patronizing grin that settles in my stomach like curdled milk. “Sweetheart, if I wasn’t discreet, I wouldn’t still be in business. You have nothing to worry about.”

Willa looks at me, though she’s already made up her mind. Mike has the personality of the soggy Taco Bell wrapper rotting on his floor, but we’ve heard he’s the best. I nod.

“We want you to start right away. Find anything and everything you can about her,” Willa says.

“That I can do.” The man holds out a hand to me with a smile, but it’s Willa who takes it.

Misogynistic asshole.

I offer a small grin and stand, shaking his hand next. I follow my wife out of the room and out of the office. We make it to our cars in silence.

“This will be good,” she assures me.
