STATEMENT OF ACCOUNTS (1968)

Wimmin’s Council of the Frankfurt Group

Following Helke Sander’s speech, women activists were prevented from distributing leaflets at the SDS’ celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of women’s suffrage. At the next conference, a meeting sharing women’s experiences within the movement led eight SDS women’s groups to support the distribution of this leaflet. In the text, the Stammtisch is the regular’s table in an inn, a common German location of male bonding. The key to the list of trophies in the graphic includes leading male figures of 1968, academics and key figures of the left. The emphasis on “penis envy” is connected to Freud’s significance both for the Frankfurt School and masculine theories of sexual liberation. The decapitalization in the original marks attempts to dethrone official language; feminists would develop their own ways of writing German to challenge gender norms. The wimmin’s council (Weiberrat) did not last long, but the ripples from the feminist critique of the SDS would spread throughout social movement organizing.
