Endnotes Chapter 10
From a population of fewer than five million, 416,809 men enlisted, of which over 60,000 were killed and 156,000 wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner.
Lieutenant Francis Ryan ‘Frank’ Smith was wounded on 8 July. On 10 November he was shot down by ground fire behind German li nes but was not captured. His sixteenth and final aircraft destroyed occurred on 14 October, which earned him the DFC. His citation, in part, said: Leading a patrol of five machines, he saw a formation of twelve Fokker D.VIIs above him. Relying on the co-operation of another higher formation of Bristol machines, he deliberately manoeuvred his formation into a disadvantageous position in order that our higher patrol might be able to attack the enemy while the latter’s attention was concentrated upon destroying his formation. The stratagem was entirely successful, with the result that two enemy machines were destroyed and two others were believed to crash. The Fokkers were then reinforced by eight more machines and in the ensuing combat Lieutenant Smith shot down one in flames, his patrol destroying two others for no loss to the Squadron.
He returned to service during World War II with the Royal Australian Air Force. Mustard was also responsible for the first aerial survey of Australia’s Barrier Reef.
Borton, born 20 September 1886 saw active service on the Western Front, in Palestine and in Iraq. On 7 June 1915, while engaged in aerial combat, he received a bullet wound to the head and neck. Although the injury was severe, Borton and his observer Captain Anthony Marshall managed to bandage the wound. Despite severe loss of blood, Borton kept control of his aircraft, completing the reconnaissance sortie and landing safely. He was later awarded the DSO for his actions. Borton’s recovery was prolonged. In early July, he was still judged to be ‘not yet out of danger’ and it was not until late October 1915 that he returned to duty. Air Vice Marshal Amyas Eden Borton CB CMG DSO AFC died on 15 August 1969.
Armageddon is the Anglicised version of the Hebrew term Har-Megiddo. Megiddo is a settlement/town in the middle of Israel/Palestine just on the Israeli side of the northwest tip of the West Bank.
In later years Williams, the first Australian graduate of the Point Cook Flying School, born in Moonta, South Australia would become Air Marshal Sir Richard Williams RAAF.
The Albatros D.5a forced down by Sandy and Hughes is preserved today in the AWM Canberra.
Captain Cobby led the AFC fly-past over London on ANZAC Day 1919 before returning to Australia and was discharged from the AIF on 24 July. He married Hilda Maude Urban on 24 April 1920 at Caulfield, Victoria. Acclaimed a national hero, Cobby transferred to the newly formed Royal Australian Air Force in 1921 and rose to the rank of wing commander. Retiring from the Air Force in 1946, Cobby served with the Department of Civil Aviation until his death on Armistice Day in 1955.
After a spell in civilian life following the war, Malley joined the RAAF in 1925, serving with 3 Squadron.
