Violet sat at her desk, lost in thought, something that had been happening on and off ever since Alma had spoken to her that morning.

Did Dhillan really lie?

“Turner!”

Violet jumped in her seat to find an angry Hopkins bearing down on her, the Orlo twins standing just behind her.

“You back from dreamland, Turner?”

Violet managed to nod her head but was cut off before she could speak.

“Now that Turner has decided to pay attention, I need you all to give me everything you have on Castell. Anything within our area, whether we investigated it or not. Got it?”

“Why?”

Hopkins cut a glance to the twins but didn't snap as she would have if it had been Violet.

Probably can't decide who spoke, Violet thought bitterly.

“Because the Feds have taken over the hunt. So let me make this crystal clear. You three will stay here, getting everything together until it is all ready for me to send off. When I come in tomorrow, not a thing must still need to be done. Understood? Good. Get to work then.”

Violet sighed, cringing into her desk. She had taken over the Castell leads, leaving only the lesser work to Harry and George.

“I'll be here until past midnight,” she groaned.

“Sorry, love.”

She looked up to find Dhillan looking down at her. “It won't be so bad if you stay and help me.”

He gave her a brief smile but shook his head. “I can't. Keme needs his medicine.” He bent to kiss the top of her head. “Good luck, sweetheart. See you later.”

Violet watched him leave with her mouth hanging open. He had never left her to fend for herself like this. She had been expecting him to go home for Keme and then come back.

She felt Alma's suspicions rise in her chest.
