“Ah, the joys of home owning . . .” Clay accepted a snifter of cognac from Will and a book he had pulled from the shelf. It was a novel about life in Cuba and Key West when the wealthy Spanish ruled the Caribbean. She flipped through some illustrations in the middle. “Thank you, Will. I'll get this back to you in a few days.”

“No hurry. You know, I don’t lend my books to just anybody. Some people can read character by looking at faces or examining palms. I can tell by how a person talks about books. Not what they read but how they care about reading. Remember the other day when you were telling me about that book you’d read on treasure hunting? I knew then that you’re a returner.”

“Returner?”

Will nodded. “People lend you things. You return them.”

Clay grinned. Being alone with Will Stone had been her goal since the night she met him. “But what if you’re wrong about me? I just might have a trunkload of other people’s volumes decaying in an attic somewhere.”

Will brought over the Hennessey V.S.O.P. and refilled their snifters. “I can tell you’re not that sort of person. You’re honest . . . hard working . . .”

“And loyal? God, you make me sound like a Canadian Mountie!”

Will laughed. “Oh, these sassy college gals.”

“Women. College women. I’ve been meaning to tell you. You use ‘girl’ and ‘gal’ much too often. It’s demeaning. This is 1974, after all.”

Will leaned over and kissed the top of her curly head. “A woman after my own heart. I'll try to be more courteous in the future. To you and the rest of your bimbo friends.” He ducked, in time to miss the pillow Clay pitched at him.

“You creep!” She looked pointedly at her watch. “Eleven-thirty. I have to go.”

“Why? Do you have a curfew?”
