Chapter 21

Greedy

Forty-five miles outside of Brooklyn, Bas pulled up to the small cottage-like home in a cozy suburban neighborhood. The house was so small his big body silver Mercedes seemed out of place parked in front of it. But Mr. Colon kept this particular house because it was low key, just like he liked it. No one suspected that he was one of the biggest cocaine suppliers on the East Coast, and that was because he moved in silence.

Bas knocked on the door and waited for a moment. The door was opened by Mr. Colon’s driver and bodyguard, Manuel. He smiled when he saw Bas.

“How are you, my friend?” Manuel greeted, shaking Bas’s hand as he came inside.

Bas sighed heavily.

Manuel nodded gravely.

“Yes, we have heard. Come. Mr. Colon is in the garden.”

Bas followed Manuel to the backyard. It was filled with rows of tomatoes, peppers, and broccoli. Mr. Colon was in the midst of the garden with a basket picking tomatoes. When he saw Bas he straightened and smiled. Mr. Colon looked like Ricardo Montalban from the TV show Fantasy Island, even though he was well into his seventies. He attributed his health to simple living. Bas admired his approach to life.

“I’m so sorry to hear about my old friend,” Mr. Colon remarked.

“Yes, but I just got word he just woke up,” Bas informed him.

Mr. Colon smiled with relief. “Wonderful!”

“Indeed . . . anyway, I just came out here so that you and I could be on the same page moving forward,” Bas said.

Mr. Colon nodded. “Yes, I understand when Santiago brought you out here and told me he was putting you in charge for a while, I totally understood. I’ve watched the three of you grow up in this game.”

“Ever since Carlos.” Bas smirked.

Mr. Colon diverted his eyes and stammered, “Yes, yes, may God bless his soul.”

“My visit isn’t to dredge up the past, Mr. Colon. I’m here to begin a new future.”

“I agree.”

Bas smiled.

“No, I don’t think you do . . . you see, that future doesn’t include you. Your services are no longer needed.”

Mr. Colon frowned, and before he could say a word, Bas whipped out his silencer equipped .45 and aimed it straight at Mr. Colon’s forehead.

Fzzz! Fzzz!

The two muffled shots burst his head open like the tomatoes in his basket. When his body dropped, he fell into the tomato vines face first.

Manuel had been sitting at the small patio table reading the paper. He had been too far away to have heard the conversation, but the two muffled shots instantly got his attention, but it was too late. Even before Mr. Colon’s body had hit the ground, Bas had spun and sent three more at Manuel.

Fzzzt! Fzzzt! Fzzzt!

All three shots ripped through the paper and lodged in Manuel’s throat, chest, and cheek. He fell backward out of his chair, gasping for air. Bas walked up calmly and stood over him.

“It was . . . you!” Manuel gaggled.

Bas aimed the gun at his head. “Surprised?”

Fzzzt!

Manuel’s brain flew out the back of his head and framed his shattered skull like an ink blot.
