Some coinage existed to indicate the peaceful co-existence of pagans and Christians. For example, one type of coin carries the name of St. Peter rather than the ruler. On closer inspection of this coin that is seemingly Christian, it shows that the ‘T’ in ‘PETRI’ takes the form of Thor’s hammer. These coins carried a significant message- that Christianity and paganism went hand in hand and were accepted.

Converting Scandinavia

There were plenty of attempts made by the Church and Christian missionaries to convert Scandinavians even before the Viking Age began. St. Wilibrord, an Anglo-Saxon, led a mission to Denmark in 725 and while he was well received by the King of Denmark, his conversion mission bore little result. St. Ansgar, a Frank, led a second missionary activity in 820 after gaining the support of Louis the Pious, the Frankish Emperor. While he succeeded in establishing missions in Denmark and Sweden, St. Ansgar had little impact on the population as a whole.
