THE FIELDS SOUTH OF KE SAT
NORTH VIETNAM
Gerber hit the ground hard, rolled into a muddy hole and then scrambled to his feet. He punched the quick release on the chute harness and stripped the oxygen mask from his face. He wiped the back of his hand across his face and realized that he was still wearing the ski mask. Instead of whipping it off, he left it on, using the black material to hide his features from the bright moonlight.
Free of the chute, he crouched on one knee, and felt the cold water seep through the fabric of his uniform. He let his eyes roam the open fields for signs of people moving, of soldiers maneuvering, but saw nothing He gathered up his chute, rolled it into a soggy, loose ball and then started moving toward the north and the rally point.
At the edge of a tree line—he couldn't tell if it was the jungle or forest—he stopped and listened. Cautiously, he moved into it, staying near the edge so he would see any- one coming toward him. He dropped his chute and quietly worked a round into the chamber of his AK-47. Then he waited, his breath rasping in his throat, wishing that he had a drink. He knew he wasn't thirsty, and that the desire was a psychological effect of the jump and the situation, but that didn't lessen the desire for water. He fought off the urge and kept his eyes on the open ground in front of him
After several minutes he caught a flicker of movement. He turned toward it and lost it and then looked away. With his peripheral vision, he found it again and watched as the man-sized shape worked its way toward the trees. Gerber didn't feel the need to challenge the man. He recognized the form and the hat and the weapon. Tyme stopped just inside the trees, and let the chute he carried fall to the ground.
Gerber hissed at him, saw him spin at the noise and then grin, his teeth white in the black of the night. He slipped closer to Gerber, dropped to one knee, and put his lips close to Gerber's ears.
"Didn't see any of the others."
"Damn," said Gerber. "I was afraid we'd scatter all over hell and gone."
A voice came from their right. "I'd suggest you two hold it down."
Gerber dropped to his stomach, aiming at the sound, before he recognized the voice as Fetterman's. Feeling foolish, he got up and moved deeper into the trees.
"As you can see," said Fetterman, "I managed to locate Kit, Krung and Galvin while you two played footsie." "You didn't see either Barlett or Duc?"
"Nope. Did find the equipment pods, though, and managed to get them over here."
"Good," said Gerber. He reached up and pulled the ski mask off his face. There was a rush of cold air that made him shiver. He mopped the sweat from his forehead with the mask, stuffed it into a pocket. He turned to Tyme, "Get this stuff buried.
