“Rhonda?” Rachel called down the dim hallway toward her sister’s room. Her call was intended to be soft enough not to wake Rhonda if she had gone to sleep, but loud enough for her to hear if she was awake. There was no answer but a soft scratching sound coming from down the hallway.
“I think I’m going out,” she continued. “I’m going to go hang out with Darcy and then go over to Billy’s.” The stillness of the house was making her uneasy, and she felt guilty for wanting to get out so badly. Also for her freshly applied makeup and the sweet smell of her perfume. “If you need anything I’ll be right across the street.” There was no reply except the same small shuffling. Except for this tiny sound, the house was warm and silent. This early in the night, the house was never so quiet. A death could do that, even one as removed from the family as Rhonda’s boyfriend. Rachel thought about it for a moment, but she couldn’t remember Jake ever visiting their house. He was that much of a noncharacter in her life. His absence, or maybe it was just Rhonda’s sadness, was still felt.
Leaving the dying house, Rachel was unhappy to find that the streets were spooky as well. Not because of the dark and chill, but because of the lack of activity. At this hour on a typical Friday night, the younger neighborhood kids would be either riding their bikes around or hiding in bushes and playing a game of “manhunt” (which was just “hide and seek” with a cooler name). The older kids would usually be gathering in someone’s garage and drinking or getting a carload of friends together to go to the movies. Tonight there was no one. Rachel quickened her steps and blamed her excitability on the bizarre week she’d been having.
Dead boyfriends, absent parents, nutzo sisters, homicidal school bullies: it was little wonder that she was headed to hang out with Darcy. Her pseudofriend’s unflagging bitchiness and predictable conversation topics (Tom and crappy music) provided normalcy at the end of a very unnormal week.
Rachel didn’t consider herself a feminist (she’d heard conflicting reports on what that even meant), but she knew that she was a lot more of one than Darcy Roberts would ever be. Darcy’s level of male dependence was almost as frightening as her penchant for risky substance abuse. It was a rare occurrence when Darcy was able to bait Rachel into participating in boy-talk, but maybe just for tonight, just because it felt like the normal “girly-girly” thing to do, she would talk about Billy Rile. She’d tell Darcy about his goofy humor, his awkward half smile and his genuine personality.
Darcy would probably laugh. But that was okay.
