Act IV

Scene 1: A wing of the Count’s palace of Aliaferia, with a prison tower in the corner. Night.

Ruiz leads Leonora forward, both cloaked. He points to the tower containing di Luna’s prisoners, including Manrico. Leonora dismisses Ruiz. She looks for protection to a ring she wears on her right hand. Leonora addresses the prison tower. She asks the tender wings of love to carry her sighs up to him, but not to let him know of the pain in her heart. Prayers are head from afar for the soul of the condemned man. Those sounds, those solemn dark prayers strike the air with terror and make Leonora’s heart pound. She hears Manrico from the tower, awaiting death and bidding Leonora farewell. Ah, these dungeon doors will only open for him when his corpse is already cold! Again Manrico bids farewell, asking Leonora never to forget him.
