Chapter 14
At my first ultrasound, life had thrown me a curveball, when they discovered the second baby. The original plan had been to find out the sex of the baby. With all the excitement, letâs call it, of finding out I was having twins, we forgot to ask. After Miller spent her night in the barn, we decided together not to know. Now I was regretting that decision. My due date was two weeks away, and we couldnât decide on names. Each of us had picked out some names, but neither of us loved them.
Miller and I had enjoyed our usual morning coffee together, watching her mare out in the field. We had talked about some more potential names, but again, they were okay, but not perfect. After our coffee, I returned to the loft and Miller went about her day.
I could see her in the distance with Amy and Roo. They were restringing a fence line that had come down overnight. I had offered to help, but all three of them shook their heads at me. They banished me to just watching from the loft.
I watched as Miller secured the wire and Roo placed the fencing staple next to the barb on the wire. A couple of swings of the hammer and it would be done. As Roo took her first swing, Miller lost her grip and the tight wire sprung up and caught her in the arm. My instinct was to run to her rescue, but there was no point. Amy was already checking the wound. I watched as Roo returned to the farm truck and retrieved the first aid kit. Amy went about doing what a mom does. Making sure Miller was okay.
That's when it hit me. My mother had died giving birth to me and Ryan. What if that happened to me? What would happen to my children? Would my family try to take them? Would Miller fight to keep them? I wasnât about to let that happen.
I called my father and told him I had made some decisions in the event something happened to me. He tried his best to reassure me that nothing would. Both my sisters have children and their deliveries went fine. My motherâs death was a one off. I disagreed and in the end he finally agreed to hear me out. Mostly, I think he was tired of arguing with a very pregnant, determined Shane. I explained my decisions, and he requested them in an email. He promised to follow that email to the letter if anything ever happened to me.
Dad,
In the event, something should happen to me during my delivery or at work. I want the following for my children.
-First and foremost. They are to stay in Millerâs care here on the ranch. I know in my heart she will love them just as much as I do.
-The trust fund you have for me will transfer to them. Miller will fight you on it. Stand your ground and tell her I said so.
