Four dead guards were stacked on one side of the doorway. They must have been heavily armed to cause such mayhem. Streaks of blood showed which direction they’d been dragged from, beyond cages from which their human shields were now being set free.

Hundreds of women staggered around the room. We’d need to find more food, somewhere in the centre, to feed them all. Female soldiers hurried into the warehouse through the door behind me. They carried stretchers. I followed their movements as they lifted injured heroes gently onto the boards. Soft sighs of pain wafted towards the door. In spite of the vast number of women, there was a hush over the room, like a spell. People worked and moved quietly. Tired feet shuffled as weak hands clung to cage bars for support. I covered my nose with my sleeve. At least Michelle wasn’t among these poor souls.

What monsters had run this place? Did they see these women as nothing more than beasts to be caged? Was that the truth behind it all? I couldn’t feel guilty about my role in overthrowing this? My heart constricted in my chest as I marched away from the man-made Hell.

Michelle was handing out soup in the office area when I burst out from the double doors, gasping for breath.

My legs buckled beneath me. Michelle’s eyes followed me downwards as I crumpled to the floor. She rushed to my side, helping me back to my feet and into a chair.

“It’s awful, isn’t it?” Michelle said.

“Did they lock you up in one of those...”

Michelle nodded and wrapped her arms around my narrow shoulders to comfort me as I wept.

“I’m so sorry.”

“Why?” Michelle asked.

“I should never have left you. I should have taken you with me.”

“I’m okay, and you’re here now.”

I stood up too quickly, and my eyes rolled in my head as I tried to gain my balance. “Are the others here?”

“Which others?” Michelle asked.

“From my group?”

“I don’t know,” Michelle said. “Probably. Rest for a few minutes, and then we’ll take a look.”

An office door opened, and a man was bundled out. There was a rope wrapped around his throat. He called out my name. Mary’s husband. He was part of this. The pretty redhead from the canteen dragged him towards other doors. I held my breath until he was out of sight.

“Who is that?” Michelle asked.

“He’s my brother in law, John,” I replied.
