“I have a few conditions,” Matt said, before he gave Kash his decision.

“You have what?”

“I want your solemn oath that everyone in our town will be cared for, that nobody will be killed. There’ll be no slavery, no abuse of women and children.”

Kash’s expression remained impassive, his lips thin and straight. “Go on.”

“And I don’t want people feeling threatened or unsafe. Emporium is a good town, the people are good people. We look after each other. I want that to continue.”

“Any more?” Kash asked, his arms folded, his glasses twitching at the end of his thin nose. “You want a daily delivery of fresh bread? Perhaps a coffee machine is set up in the town hall?”

Matt felt his temper flare. “Now you’re trying to make me sound like a fool.”

Kash laughed, bitter and cold. “I think you’re doing a pretty good job of that yourself.”

“I’m trying to broker a peace treaty here.”

Kash turned to the man standing next to him. “Nate, please show Mr Groover what we think of his peace treaty.”

Without a second’s hesitation, the Cabal soldier raised his rifle and fired two rounds into Billy’s chest, puncturing his heart. He was dead before he hit the floor.

Laura leaped back, reaching for her own gun, and Matt glared down at Billy as a pool of blood grew like a flower from his motionless body. “Holy shit.”

“I wouldn’t do anything rash,” Kash said, turning to Laura. “Nate here has a twitchy trigger finger.”

Her hand slipped away from her weapon as the color slowly drained from Matt’s face. He’d made a terrible mistake thinking he could barter with these people. He and Laura were backed into a corner with no way out.

“I need your decision, Mr Groover,” Kash said. “And if I were you, I would make sure it’s the right one.”

Slowly Matt nodded, feeling like he was standing at the edge of a precipice, the ground falling away beneath him.

“We’re in,” he said. “We’ll do what you want.”
