It was over a hundred degrees on Monday morning, and I warred with myself on what to wear. There would be air conditioning at the arena, of course, but I didn’t want to wear a suit on a day like today. The Human Resources director had told me dress was business casual, which could mean anything in today’s world, and while I had a great wardrobe, nothing in my closet seemed right.

Jean-Michel had offered to drive me this morning, but I’d declined, wanting to have a few minutes to myself on the drive over.

It was my first day of my first real job.

I needed to wrap my head around that.

“I hope you’re not going to work like that,” Mom said, coming into my room as I stood in front of my closet in my bra and panties.

“No.” I made a face. “It’s so hot out, and the idea of putting on a suit is yucky.”

She chuckled. “What about this?” She pointed to a light green sleeveless dress that buttoned up the front and fell to just below the knee. It was casual, but in no way revealing, though it showed off my slender figure.

“I suppose.” I pulled it out and slid it over my shoulders, buttoning it up.

“You look lovely and professional and mostly cool,” she said, pushing my hair back off my shoulders.

“Heels or sandals?” I asked her.

“Low heels.” She rummaged through my boxes of shoes. “These?”

“Okay.” I was more nervous than I’d thought I would be, so I slid my feet into the beige sandals she’d handed me and dabbed on some lipstick.

“You’re going to do great.” She kissed my cheek. “Call me if you get a break. I want to hear everything.”

“I will.”

“And don’t forget—Van is invited to dinner.”

“I won’t.” It was so weird hearing everyone call him Van. To me, he was Jean-Michel. That was how we’d met, that was all I’d called him, and Van seemed so out of character for him with his rich accent and muscular body. Van sounded like a skinny blond surfer in California somewhere.

The thought made me chuckle, and I grabbed a travel mug of coffee as I got into Mom’s Mercedes. I hadn’t driven since Christmas until yesterday when I mentioned it to Jean-Michel. He’d immediately suggested I drive his SUV to lunch, since I’d admitted I hadn’t driven much since getting my license.

He was so thoughtful. Always. Even after our condom situation the other night. He’d been sweet and apologetic, and then we’d had a long conversation about going without condoms once we got into bed. I just wished he would confide in me about his past, and the things that made him think he wasn’t a good boyfriend.

In my experience, he was the best boyfriend anyone could ask for.

I took a deep breath as I showed my ID to the security guard at the employee entrance and tried to clear my mind of everything except my new job. It might not be my dream job, but it was something to put on a resume and a steady paycheck.
