PART IV: DISCOVERY

ONE

Two vampires moved slowly and carefully through the shadows at the edge of Stonewall. They were the final two members of Umbra Force, Suraya’s elite soldiers, the team that had been destroyed. Still, they were considered the best of them all, though Jody Hanville didn’t think of herself as much of a fighter. She was a survivor and did whatever was necessary to maintain her existence. The other, Blake Lloyd, had survived and thought little of his existence, living only to satisfy his own desires, the needs to feed and to seek the total obliteration of the human race.

Blake wasn’t very tall nor was he very large. He stood a couple of inches short of six feet and weighed just a bit over a hundred and thirty pounds. He’d always been thin and thought he looked like a poor imitation of a scarecrow, though without straw and hillbilly clothing. His jet-black hair, cut fairly short, was kept constantly slicked back and emphasized his sharp features. He’d kept it that way since long before becoming a vampire. As a human, he’d always opted for dark clothing and looked on the dark side of life. With that outlook, it hadn’t surprised him to learn he had stage four pancreatic cancer in such a state that it was inoperable. The arrival of the vampires had seemed a godsend to him and he’d accepted the transition willingly and happily. Suraya had, in fact, been the one to turn him and save him from a painful death and he remained loyal to her and their cause. Even without her presence, he was dedicated to seeing the last of the humans removed from the Earth, even if it meant killing them all.

Jody’s story was a little different. She’d been a stable woman with a family, a husband and daughter, and everything seemed to always go right for her. She’d had a good life, stayed at home and sold cosmetics, rather successfully, while taking care of everything else included in running a home, the cleaning and organizing, the grocery shopping, balancing the budget, and a hundred other things. When the vampires had attacked, while her husband and daughter had been at a college softball game, she’d felt a strange sense of relief as they’d taken and turned her. She would no longer have to be the domestic goddess she’d become and would have the freedom to do certain things she’d always wanted to do. She did love her family, but she’d felt it to be a little stifling and wanted a change. The change she’d finally received had been much more than she’d ever expected and she’d grown to love it.

With the loss of the other members of Umbra Force and the vanishing of Suraya, Jody and Blake were somewhat at a loss. With the Priest taking control of the vampire forces, they’d both been worried that they would be sent into battle, taken from the headquarters, and given the worst possible assignments, but Levi had taken Yvette’s advice and kept them around.
