Chapter 13

WE ALL CROWDED AROUND the rickety desk in the corner. We had to squeeze in tight for everyone to see and I was in the middle. I would have been lying if I said my body being pressed in between all of them didn't give me a rush, but I might have been hopped up on adrenaline too.

The closer I looked the more I got a feel for why Colt was ravaging through the papers, they were maps. The desk was covered in different types of maps, it looked like he had gotten as much information about the outskirts that he could, printed them off and crumpled them up in his jacket pocket before they tranquilized him.

"That's exactly what I did." Colt answered. "I knew this year they were trying to surprise the contenders with a new setting, and they thought no one knew that it would take place in the outskirts. But I pride myself on keeping my ability a secret for this very reason. I grabbed as much intel as I could before they took me down."

"You smart bastard." Drax smiled. He leaned in closer to the map and squinted. "So if I'm not mistaken the famous opera house is on the corner of Fifth Street and Whey Avenue. It was one of the first set up in the city that had television broadcasting capabilities. The tech is probably outdated, but I'm sure I could fix it up good enough to hijack their broadcast."

We all stared at Drax again, it was weird hearing things come out of his mouth that didn't involve whiskey or women. He had layers, ones that nobody else knew about, and it was kind of refreshing. The more I got to know him the more I realized that he was like me, more than just a pretty face.

"There it is." Colt put his finger down on the map. "Now we just have to figure out where the bloody hell we are and we've got ourselves a plan."

I glanced around the room. This was a hotel, there had to be something in here that had the address. "Here!" I picked up a to go menu that was covered in dust. It had the hotel address on the front.

"Oh I could kiss you right now." Colt sighed. "I mean, if we weren't trying to survive. You know, maybe under different circumstances. Not that there's anything wrong with the circumstances it's just-"

"Colt." I shushed. "The map."

"Right, yes." He searched the map and found the hotel. "We're exactly on the opposite end of the city. It's at least a two day walk to get there, and that's if the other contenders don't off us before that."

"Or the radioactive weather storms." Drax nodded.

My eyes widened. "What the hell kind of stuff were they dumping out here?"

There was a loud crash in the hallway and all of our heads snapped in that direction.

"Guys, what do you think the odds are that we're the only contenders that were dropped at this hotel?" My heart raced.
