10. Lizbeth

I’VE NEVER SEEN SO many people in one place. Kane introduces me to Ross and Kass, the heads of his group. I sit on a chair, and Kane stands behind me. Ross and Kass sit on either side of me, Alex and his group sit at one end, and the witches are in opposite us.

“All of us know part of what is going on, and I’ll tell you what I know and why Lizbeth is part of it.” Everyone nods at Kane’s statement and he tells them how Alex called him about a rescue situation with a vampire that saw something she shouldn’t have. “I don’t know all the details, Lizbeth can tell you more. I can tell you they badly want her, enough to target an agent from the agency. They followed us here with the intent to capture or kill us. It sure wasn’t an invitation to a tea party.”

I smile at his words.

“Can you tell us more, Lizbeth?”

I look at one of the witches and recognize her from the club where I first met Kane. “Sure, but I want to know more about all of you first. Why are the witches involved in this?”

The three witches look at each other, the older one, at least she seems older than the others, rises from her chair. “We have some information. We are part of the witches’ government, meaning that while each coven has its own internal affairs, we oversee all of them. I’m Gwen Kahnis, and I was what you’d call a lone witch for a long time. Other covens have started talking about people or artifacts that have gone missing or have been stolen. That’s a first. The only way that could happen is if it was someone on the inside. One thing’s for sure, some of the warrior witch covens have started to get calls from hidden artifacts which aren’t supposed to be found.”

“Calls?”

She sighs. “Well, one way of explaining it is that some of us have had distinct impressions. The warrior witches can fight with or without a weapon, but they also get callings from artifacts that could be in the wrong hands. The calling doesn’t happen like this. Lately they don’t have the time to stop and heal between fights, which is causing our healers to have to work overtime as well.”

“I see. What I can tell you is this…” I tell them my story, about Alto and his son Bran but mostly about his blood brother Damaris and the murder of Alto’s security guard.

“Well, this is odd. Usually, blood is more important than anything with vampires.”

“True, but in his case, he can’t be the head of the faction since Alto has a son with his human mate. Automatically, leadership will go to Bran directly without a fight or debate within the clan. I think Damaris badly wants to be in charge and has probably been promising power to those who help him which he can’t have until Bran is killed. Alto still has his human mate with him.
