THE DARK FOREST
CHAPTER 5

As the Hunter and the girl returned to the wagon, they were met by Grannyâs wrath-filled visage. Despite having defeated the sand men by some means even D didnât understand, she didnât seem confident in herself. There would be more trouble related to Tae, it seemed.
âThe waterâs shot,â Granny said, pinning Tae with a reproachful gaze as she did so. âBefore she ran off on us, the girl left the spigot on the tank open. Weâve shut it again, but given the number of us, what we have wonât last half the day. If we spread it thin as possible, weâd still only get three days.â
âIf there were only half as many of us, itâd last six days,â Clay interjected with amusement from high in the saddle. âCare to see whoâs gonna get to drink that water?â
The space between all of them was strung with invisible threads of tension.
âYouâve got a point there,â Granny said, looking as she did at Lance from the corner of her eye. âI suppose we canât let those that arenât pulling their own weight drink our water.â
Lance lowered his eyes. He was well aware of where he stood.
âHow long would it last between four people?â
At that abrupt question, Granny stared at the young man in black with astonishment. âWell,â she replied, âbarely a day and a half, I suppose.â
âMake it two.â
âI suppose we can manage that. But traveling by day should be a lot more painful for you than it is for us.â
âThe night makes up for it. He can have my share.â
The old woman turned and exchanged glances with Clay. âNow, this is a surprise. I didnât know you were one to worry about anyone else. And here I thought you had liquid darkness flowing through you instead of blood. Thatâs very kind of you, but me and Tae will take it instead.â
But Granny was in for yet another surprise.
Sulkily, Clay said, âI donât want any either.â
Not only did Granny have her mouth agape, but Lance didas well.
Gazing steadily at D, Clay said, âIf he ainât drinking, thereâs no way Iâm gonna keep wetting my whistle. If anybody could accuse me of taking the easy way out, Iâd never live it down.â
âOh, dear me, if thatâs not enough to bring a tear to my eye,â Granny said, bowing her head as if deeply touched. âIâve lived a good long time, but Iâve never heard anything as fine as all that. Yes, indeedâyou men can be mighty impressive. Good enough. Iâll give both your shares to Tae.â
It was just like the crone to make no mention of what would become of her own share of the water. But just then a third shock was delivered to Granny.
âThat wonât be necessary,â the girl declared.
âHowâs that?â asked Granny.
Everyone turned to the girl, who met them with a distant look in her eyes. She was staring off in the same direction sheâd headed during her escape. The fact of the matter was that Tae had someone to guide her.
